Computer Science Coastal Hub

No Cost Professional Development for K-12 Educators

The Computer Science Coastal Hub workshops offer BIG ideas, CORE ideas, and ADVANCED TOPICS that will fully engage all K-12 teachers in order to:


  • Increase the number of well-prepared, high-quality educators from diverse backgrounds to teach Computer Science.
  • Expand equitable access to high-quality, standards-based Computer Science education for all K–12 students.
  • Provide resources aligned with the 2020 NJSLS-CS to assist schools as they expand Computer Science education in the classroom or through extra-curricular activities across grades K-12.


IMPORTANT INFORMATION! Workshops are available at NO COST to the school district. When teachers attend programming during the school day, schools will be reimbursed for the cost of substitutes. When teachers attend after-school, in the evening, or on Saturday, they will receive a stipend from the CS Coastal Hub.  PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED! Last Opportunity to Join a CS Cohort! CS Coastal Hub: CORE Cohort 11- Wednesday Evening

February 28 and March 6, 13, 20, & 27, 2024 - 5 pm to 8 pm


The CORE is the CS Coastal Hubs signature series to integrate Computer Science across the curriculum. We will help you design a plan to incorporate computer science whether you want to embed it into a core content or a special to meet the needs of your students. Topics will include unplugged computer science, physical computing, curriculum writing, data, networks, and artificial intelligence.

Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across the region, become part of a PLC with coaching and support, hands on experience with grant supported resources, access to the lending library and more!

CS Coastal Hub Elective: Elementary Screen Free Coding

February 8, 2024 - 9 am to 3 pm


Our Elementary Screen-Free Coding Workshop is designed to engage young minds in the exciting realm of programming without the need for screens or devices. Participants will engage in hands-on activities and games that teach them the fundamental concepts of coding. They will use tangible materials and creative thinking to solve problems, fostering a deep understanding of coding principles.

CS Coastal Hub Elective: K-12 Sphero 

February 13, 2024 - 9 am to 3 pm


Our workshop is specifically designed for educators of all levels, focusing on the Sphero Indi and Sphero Bolt. Through this workshop, you will gain the knowledge and skills to inspire your students through imaginative and play-based learning. By utilizing these robots, you will empower your students to develop computational thinking skills, while also learning the fundamentals of coding and problem-solving. The Sphero Indi is an excellent tool for early learning in literacy and language development. It is an entry-level learning robot that is driven by color, making it approachable for students of all levels. During the workshop, participants will progress to block-based programming using the Sphero Edu Jr. app, allowing them to unlock even more potential from these amazing robots. Furthermore, we will explore the capabilities of the Sphero Bolt. This includes drawing with the sensor-based robot, collecting and analyzing data, as well as engaging in block-based and JavaScript text programming. By the end of the workshop, we will provide suggestions for classroom applications that cater to all grade levels, experience levels, and content areas.

This workshop is tailored for grade 9-12 teachers, offering a deep dive into using Micro:bits to teach coding, electronics, and computational thinking in your classrooms using Block-based coding, JavaScript, or Python, inspiring the next generation of tech-savvy innovators.

February 15, 2024 - 9 am to 3 pm


Unlock the world of invention and coding with the LittleBits STEAM+ Coding Kit to fuel critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork through hands-on activities and projects. Computer Science has never been more fun as we use the kit's bits and accessories to create a wide range of electronic inventions and prototypes that can be coded with the LittleBits Fuse app.

CS Coastal Hub Elective: Explore Electronics and Coding with Arduino for the Secondary Classroom (Saturday session)

February 24, 2024 - 9 am to 1 pm



Arduino is one of the most commonly used microcontroller platforms that has only gained in popularity thanks to its affordability, versatility, and ease of use. Like other microcontrollers, such as the Micro:bit or Raspberry Pi, an Arduino can perform endless functions in combination with simple circuits and electronic components. Arduino is unique in its versatile capabilities, with limitless possibilities that are all created through a script-based programming platform. Suitable for students with some prior coding experience, Arduino may be the perfect addition to your middle or high school computer science classroom! In this workshop, we start from the basics as we learn to create autonomous circuits electronic functions using the fundamental Arduino platform.

CS Coastal Hub Elective: Makerspace: Grades K-12

February 26, 2024 - 9 am to 3 pm



Bring your imagination and creativity! In this exciting and interactive workshop, participants will have the opportunity to discover how schools are integrating "making" into their classrooms and libraries by spending a Makerspace Monday exploring with us. Participants will have the opportunity to make, design, program, and play while exploring the elements that comprise a makerspace. Participants will also learn how to foster innovation and creativity in all curricula, from STEM to the arts to the humanities. Want to know how to create or expand your own spaces? Are you on a tight budget? This workshop will provide a hands-on, interactive maker's environment for attendees to explore some of the new digital, high tech, and low-tech fabrication tools used in schools. Participants will leave full of ideas for affordable spaces AND curricular connections in all areas: Arts, STEM, Humanities, and Languages.

CS Coastal Hub Elective: Introduction to Python

February 27, 2024 - 9 am to 3 pm


In this engaging and interactive session students will dive into the exciting world of Python programming and discover the fundamental concepts necessary to get started with coding. Participants will be introduced to the versatile and beginner friendly Python programming language.


Participants will learn about Python syntax, data types, variables, and basic control structures empowering them to write their first lines of code! Through hands-on activities and guided exercises students will gain practical experience in solving problems and implementing algorithms using Python. By the end of the workshop, participants will be ready to write Python code and embark on their programming journey. You will be equipped with the tools to explore more advanced concepts and tackle real world programming challenges. This session is designed for people with no programming experience. Join this workshop and we will unlock the world of Python programming together.

In this workshop, we'll integrate captivating stories that you can find in your classroom, with computer science concepts to make learning both entertaining and educational. Through interactive and hands-on activities, participants will delve into coding fundamentals, logic, and problem-solving. Follow the adventures of characters who use coding and computational thinking to solve problems, fostering a love for both reading and computer science.

CS Coastal Hub Elective: Integrating Computer Science in The Secondary Math/Science Classroom 

March 7, 2024 - 9 am to 3 pm


Are you a secondary math or science teacher looking to integrate computer science concepts? This workshop is designed to provide you with practical strategies, resources and hands-on activities to seamlessly integrate computer science into your curriculum.

We will look at how computational thinking can enhance problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities in your students. You will learn how to introduce coding, programming, and data analysis concepts in a way that aligns to both your math/science curriculum standards as well as the NJDOE Computer Science standards.

Many of the principles of computer science can be better applied and understood when experienced in the "non-tech" world. This workshop demonstrates lessons that can be used to teach the key, NJ standard-aligned components of computer science before applying them with the more complex use of technology. Time will be provided to engage in and explore interactive, grade-level appropriate, tactile activities.

CS Coastal Hub Elective: K-12 CS through STEM

Computer Science is not just a single subject but actually a unification of all the STEM fields. This workshop will teach teachers how to integrate computer science into their classrooms using STEM concepts. Participants will explore various ways of teaching CS principles through project-based learning ideas to help foster an early interest in computing and inspire more students to pursue careers in related fields.

CS Coastal Hub Elective: MakerSpace with 3D Printing

March 25, 2024 - 9 am to 3 pm



Discover the possibilities of combining Computer Science and 3D printing in Makerspaces! Join us for an interactive session focused on 3D Printing, where you will engage in a series of hands-on exercises designed to teach you how to create 3D designs. Learn how to use easy-to-use coding software to create functional items, explore the materials commonly used in schools, and master the working and calibration of a 3D Printer to ensure successful prints. You will also learn how to slice objects into G-code that the printer can comprehend. This workshop will equip you with the knowledge and resources to integrate computer science standards into 3D printing best practices, enabling you to guide your students in 3D designing and printing.

Master of Arts in Education Literacy Track

The Master of Arts in Education program is pleased to offer an on-line graduate level Literacy track designed to prepare teachers to meet the needs of all PreK-12 learners in the areas of reading and writing.
