We've got your back! You can get a free kitchen compost pail through the City of Ventura's Residential Organic Waste Recycling Program.

Residents can pick up a compost pail in the lobby of our office at 336 Sanjon Road (8:00am-5:00pm).

A perfect introductory class for children (ages 10+) and adults! This class will cover easy to grow native plants and provide a hands on activity and plants to take home. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Register for 10 Easy Native Plants for Beginners!

Community Compost Helpers

Get in the dirt with us and learn about the magical world of compost & soil health!



The Ventura Compost Co-op program makes composting easy and accessible.

We are seeking volunteers to help maintain the community compost bins and piles at Cornucopia Community Gardens.

All ages are welcome, no experience necessary! Community service hours are available to students and groups.

• Composting requires 3 things: air, moisture, and 30:1 ratio of carbon (paper, leaves, etc.) to nitrogen (food scraps).

Red Wigglers (Eisenia Fetida) are one of only a handful of Earthworm species that are suitable to use for composting. Read on for more about these small, but mighty eating machines:

• Red Wigglers prefer leafy greens, vegetables, coffee grounds, tea bags and minimal bread and cereals. They cannot eat meat, bones, dairy, oil, citrus, sugar and salty foods. Worms breathe through their skin, so salt will kill them!
• Red Wigglers have cells called chemoreceptors that allow them to “taste” food.
