A National Look -  Primary season is at full volume right now with candidates vying for the presidency of the United States. Candidates toss around promises and platitudes like parade candy, which is why we are looking at NAR's federal policies this week.

We also want to highlight local legislation that targets affordable housing and landlords. Lastly, have you kept up with news about Mayor Bowser's 2017 Budget? We're bringing in an expert this week to talk about it.

2016 Through The National Lens
It's been a little while since we last checked in with our friends at the National Association of REALTORS®. With election season in full swing and the announcement of President Obama's FY17 Federal Budget proposal, there's a lot going on. Take a quick look at national issues NAR is tracking to bring yourself up to speed.
RPAC Gives Your Profession A Voice
This time of year is crucial for not only our local real estate community, but also for those real estate professionals across the country. While DC lacks a proper voice and representation in Congress, you can still do your part to invest in RPAC and have a voice that represents you on the national level.
RPAC ensures the message of the importance of home ownership is heard by local, state and national leaders. Given our elected District officials address both state and local matters, almost every dollar invested stays within the bounds of the District. The rest goes to support causes spearheaded by NAR.
Legislation DCAR is Watching
We are keeping tabs on two recently introduced pieces of legislation. DCAR has not yet taken a position, but we invite you to send us your feedback and questions. Please contact DCAR Legislative Counsel Katalin Peter.
  • Bill 646 - Property Rehabilitation for Affordable Housing Act of 2016
This Bill aims to establish a program to transform vacant buildings and blighted properties, among others up for tax sale, into affordable housing accommodations.
  • Note: The properties would be those owing more than 50% of their assessed value in back taxes.
  • Bill 647 - Rental Housing Late Fees Fairness Amendment Act of 2016
This legislation limits the amount of late fees a landlord may charge a tenant for unpaid rent. The Bill also adds additional rules for notices and violations.
