Excessive Heat: What to Do and Where to Go | |
|
As the summer continues, rising temperatures can put people at risk for heat-related illness and death.
During a heat emergency, the public is urged to take extra precautions to protect themselves. High-risk groups such as adults age 55 and older, children under the age of five, and people with chronic illness are urged to stay inside air-conditioned buildings between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., the hottest part of the day.
To avoid heat-related illnesses:
- Drink lots of liquids even before getting thirsty, but avoid those with caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar because these can dehydrate.
- Conduct exercise or outdoor work in the early morning or evening when it is cooler. Remember to take frequent breaks during strenuous activity.
- People without air conditioning can visit a cooling center. When temperatures reach the high 90s, using electric fans without an air-conditioner will raise internal body temperature. Taking frequent cool baths or showers is a much better way to minimize the effects of the heat.
- Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that permits the evaporation of perspiration.
- Never leave a person or a pet inside a closed, parked car during hot weather.
- Stay alert to heat advisories from the National Weather Service
| | |
|
In case of heat exhaustion, get to a cool, air-conditioned place, drink water if conscious, and take a cool shower or use a cold compress. In the case of a heat stroke, call 9-1-1.
Learn about the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke at bit.ly/heat-illness-info.
In cases of extreme heat, you can also go to cooling centers, large spaces with A/C. For a full listing of all the cooling locations visit the City of Houston OEM website.

After nearly a year of development, new soccer pitches were completed at Burnett Bayland Park. Soccer is the primary sport of play in Gulfton, and these mini pitches provide new ways to play the game with family and friends.
The Houston Dynamo partnered with Harris County to develop 15 mini-pitches across the city and county by 2024. Precinct 4 provided $150,000 for the initial phase and plans to spend more than $1 million in renovations. The original funding was in addition to $100,000 pledged by District J Council Member Edward Pollard and the Gulfton Management District.
