City of Houston and Bezos Academy

Open Three Free Preschools

Following the announcement of a

10-year lease agreement between the City of Houston and Bezos Academy last year, three preschools are now open in Houston and currently accepting applications for the 2023-2024 school year. The partnership is championed by the Mayor’s Office of Education and Youth Engagement which worked to place the preschools in Houston’s most historically under resourced communities, ensuring every child will have equitable opportunities for education that propels them to a meaningful and successful future.

Bezos Academy Houston locations include the Denver Harbor Multi-Service Center, in Magnolia Park at the Community Family Center Building, and in North Shore at the San Jacinto College North Campus.

These preschools were also supported by the Mayor’s Office of Complete Communities, the Houston Health

Department, Community Family Centers, and San Jacinto College. All three sites will offer year-round programming, five days a week, for children ages 3-5 years old. Students will also be provided with everything needed during the day, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. To learn more about eligibility, visit the Bezos Academy website.

“We are happy to continue to work with Bezos Academy to fight for the future of all children, especially those within our Complete Communities,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “When we invest in our children, we are investing in a brighter and more equitable future for our city,”

All three locations are still accepting applications through 11:59 p.m. PST, Monday, June 5.

Mayor Turner Names New Asian American and

Pacific Islander Advisory Board

Today, Mayor Sylvester Turner announced the establishment of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Advisory Board, a step towards fostering stronger connections between the City of Houston and its diverse communities. This newly formed board will serve as a vital bridge, ensuring that the voices, concerns, and contributions of the AAPI community are heard and included in the city’s decision-making processes.

Mayor Turner recognizes the importance of embracing and celebrating the vibrant cultures that weave together the fabric of Houston. With the establishment of the AAPI Advisory Board, the City of Houston reaffirms its commitment to upholding the values of inclusivity, respect, and representation.

“The formation of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Advisory Board is an exciting development for our city,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Houston has a rich history of Asian immigrants contributing to our community for over 150 years. As the AAPI population has grown significantly in the past few decades, it is imperative that we continue to foster a sense of belonging and provide a platform for their voices to be heard. I am confident that this advisory board will play a pivotal role in addressing the concerns of the AAPI community and ensuring their needs are met, not just in my administration, but well into the future.”

More Reliable Pedestrian Network is Complete

The Gulfton community is the most densely populated community and one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Houston, with nearly 36 miles of streets that have either no sidewalks or sidewalks in very poor condition. It also has the highest rates of pedestrian-vehicle crashes compared to all of Houston’s Complete Communities. 3. Review and update existing city funding sources
  4. Create a maintenance training program
