Compassion in Review: U.S. Urban Focus

 

Compassion Creates Change™ is working to create sustainable, healthy, and safe communities through innovative partnerships and community development strategies in the domestic U.S and in contexts around the globe. Michael Mata, board member and community transformation strategist with Compassion Creates Change™, provides leadership and consultancy for this domestic work - and the organization is grateful to have him. Mata has designed and administered community and faith-based programs for more than thirty years (both urban and rural) which include community development initiatives, intercultural and peace-building programs, leadership development, and community youth development. Currently under Michael's leadership, Compassion Creates Change™ is working on two projects in the LA area. The Cecil Murray Center for Civic Engagement

Compassion Creates Change™ partners with the Cecil Murray Center for Civic

Engagement at USC on its Faith Leaders Institute (FLI).  FLI is underwritten by The California Endowment to provide training and development support to faith leaders from four communities: South Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, Long Beach and Santa Ana.  Workshops and mentoring are offered in the areas of leadership, community and organizational development.  This partnership is involved in strengthening the program design (e.g. application process, organizational assessments) and delivery of the workshop content (developing workshop templates and recruitment of presenters).  The project also coaches FLI graduates as they begin their journey to become change agents in their respective organizations and communities.  This 12-week program is offered annually.

 

Azusa Pacific Seminary - Masters in Transformational Urban Leadership

Compassion Creates Change™ is partnering with Azusa Pacific Seminary to lay the foundation for a new 2-yr degree program at Azusa Pacific Seminary (formerly known as Azusa Pacific University School of Theology, aka Haggard School of Theology).  The new degree, a Masters in Transformational Urban Leadership (MATUL), is designed on the basis of its successful international MATUL program. However, the focus will be on domestic ministry (i.e. LA) with marginal or vulnerable populations.  This project will identify high poverty communities, potential "anchor" church partners (where students will be based), internships sites, possible host families (with whom students will live), instructors and a student recruitment strategy. The MATUL program is planned to be up and running Fall of 2014.
