A picture of LGBTQ+ Minnesotans

It's not been easy to get accurate data about the nation's LGBTQ+ population, but that is changing as U.S. Census Bureau survey tools and other surveys ask more questions about sexual orientation and gender identity. In honor of Pride Month, IT analyst Megan Chmielewski brings together the data available to paint a picture of LGBTQ+ Minnesotans.

African Economic Development Solutions (AEDS) works to counteract economic disparities experienced by African immigrants in Minnesota. In last month's Insights article, “The importance of data disaggregation: Minnesota's Asian communities,” we looked in part at the many paths Asian Minnesotans took to settle in the state. The article shows how quality-of-life outcomes differ across Minnesota’s Asian cultural communities, and how these outcomes often are correlated with specific communities’ social, economic, and political history.

Red Lake Nation College opens in Minneapolis

KARE-11 was at Red Lake Nation College in Minneapolis on June 6 to mark the opening of the first tribal college in an urban setting. "According to Minnesota Compass, about 44% of the ... American Indian population [within the state of Minnesota] lives in the Twin Cities, yet there wasn't a tribal college." The college offers a curriculum "grounded in Ojibwe language and culture." According to College President Dan King, about 80% of the student body is first-generation, and 73% of the faculty is native.
