Dear Village Project Family:
On Monday, May 13, many of the Village Project's supporters came out and supported the restoration of DCYF funding for our summer enrichment program. We are so appreciative of your taking time to attend and support our children. The Executive Director, Adrian Williams was given an opportunity to state our case and that was a good thing. A BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL for coming out to support us!
However, this is just the beginning of this process and we are hoping for your continued support of our efforts. To reiterate, last summer, we received funding from the Mayor's Department of Youth, Children and Families (DCYF) to support our free summer enrichment camp. Though the funding was small, it greatly impacted our program, allowing us to give over 45 kids a safe summer of positive and fun activities, including literacy/math classes, field trips, tennis, swimming, dancing, voice, gardening lessons, just to name a few. In spite of implementing our best camp ever, we recently found out that these funds are no longer available to our much needed program for the next 3 years. Only 3 youth programs were awarded funds to service all of the Western Addition's children this summer. What will happen to those kids, the most vulnerable to poverty, violence and summer learning loss, who do not have access to free safe programming this summer? We must take better care of our children if we want to grow positive, healthy and productive adults.
The Village Project will continue it's much needed services, but we still need your help in order to get this small, but much needed funding restored to the Village Project. You can support us by:
- Writing, e-mailing or calling Mayor Ed Lee, Maria Su (DCYF) and the members of the Board of Supervisors, especially our District 5 Supervisor, London Breed and request that our funding be restored so that we can continue to keep our children from harm's way and to give them positive and productive experiences for the summer and after school.
- Attend the Budget & Finance Committee's meeting on Wednesdays at 1 PM and testifying that The Village Project has done the work for eight years and has served the Western Addition community with a steadfast commitment.
We will continue to pursue our leaders and will attend the Board of Supervisors' and the Budget and Finance Committee meetings to further state our cause and will keep you updated on our progress. We are also circulating a petition to present to Mayor Lee. Call us if you would like to help us gather signatures.
Thank you in advance for your ongoing support.
