Dear Friends and Neighbors,

It was my privilege to be honored this week with an Our Town Thanks You “OTTY” Award for over a decade of service in the Assembly to the Upper East Side, Yorkville and Roosevelt Island. The “OTTY” ceremony is a tradition for over 20 years and shines a light on East Siders committed to improving our neighborhoods and celebrate our local community newspaper.

Our community office hosted a no-cost screening mammogram van to eligible women. Regular screenings and early detection is key. Women whose breast cancer is detected at an early stage have a 93% or higher survival rate in the first five years.

We welcomed a new resource for asylum seekers in New York City at the local Avenue Church on First Avenue and 90th Street. Volunteer led and run, the Little Shop of Kindness is making a difference in the lives of our new neighbors by helping asylum seekers.

The City Council Participatory Budgeting program is open for voting through Sunday, April 14. Our office served as a voting site inviting District 5 residents to vote on how to spend $1,000,000.

On behalf of the New York State Assembly, a proclamation was presented to Marvin Sandler, retiring board member of the Carl Schurz Park Conservancy, for his years of service and dedication to the conservancy.

Our community office team viewed the spectacular solar eclipse from our corner on 79th Street and York Avenue. I hope you did too!

Boosting Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises and small businesses lifts our entire economy. A new law now in effect helps those businesses in highly distressed areas obtain loans through the Capital Access Program. It also requires outreach and marketing to financial institutions to increase awareness of the program (Ch. 699 of 2023).
