The City of Highland Park Police Department was made aware of a social media post of a Highland Park resident who implied a threat of violence alongside photos of firearms. Police immediately began an investigation which included speaking to the individual who was cooperative with police. The individual is not lawfully able to purchase or possess any firearms, and none were located after a search of his property. As part of the follow-up, the City filed a request for, and was granted, a Firearms Restraining Order from the Lake County Circuit Court, our staff made the appropriate notification to the Illinois State Police Firearm Services Bureau, and the individual has voluntarily sought assistance. At this time, there is no threat to public safety.
Public safety is one of the City’s top priorities and we continue to encourage to public to share any concerns so they can be properly reviewed. All community members, including residents, business owners, and employees, can help by reporting suspicious behaviors, threats, or other activity to law enforcement by calling 911.
