Community Connection

As the school year ended, Communities In Schools of North Texas had a lot of very difficult goodbyes in preparation for the next school year. Due to the state funding cuts, two of our daytime case management programs will close over the summer, while several others will be split in half, with one full time staff serving two campuses.

In addition, Gary Henderson accepted a position at United Way of Denton County in order to help ease the administrative financial obligations of the organization. I will be serving as Interim CEO while the Board of Directors conducts an executive search.

But as summer arrived the tides began to turn. Communities In Schools of North Texas was recently awarded one of the 21st Century Community Learning Center Cycle 7 grants. This grant will allow us to open 10 new after school programs across Denton ISD and Lewisville ISD, bringing in $8 million over the next five years. As a result we will provide extended school day academic support to more than 1,000 at-risk students in those two school districts!

We are so excited about what the future holds for Communities In Schools of North Texas and are grateful for the support we have received from each of you! We continue to wait on the final word from the legislature about funding as they vote on a budget, but we are in constant pursuit of alternate funding sources in hopes that we can continue to provide services to as many students as possible.

Thank you for all you do to support the kids in the North Texas communities!

What's best for Jesus

Jennifer Hughes, Program Manager at DeLay Middle School in Lewisville ISD, talks about Susan Blockley, a long-term mentor with Communities In Schools of North Texas.

Susan has been meeting with her student Jesus since he was a little boy in the 3rd grade. He is now a young man who will be entering the 8th grade next year.

The first time I met both of them I could tell how much they truly care about each other. Susan has always been one of the most consistent mentors I have had. She has only missed meeting Jesus a few times this year, and I can always count on her to be here on time every Wednesday.

We have had to change the mentoring schedule several times this year, but Susan always does what is best for Jesus and changed her work schedule in order to better help him. Click to read entire story

Mentoring
At Communities In Schools of North Texas, we love volunteers! It is the work and commitment of our volunteer mentors and tutors that push our students to improve their academic performance, decrease the number of missed schoold days, and have better behavior in school and at home.

If you would like to be a mentor when school starts again in August, we have a place for you! Our orientations will begin in August but we can go ahead and get you on the road now to changing the life of a child!
