Criminology assistant professor discusses cybercrime and cybersecurity programs in new podcast episode

C. Jordan Howell, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Criminology, spoke on the Cybersecurity Guide podcast to discuss his journey in academia and the cybersecurity- and cybercrime-related programs available at USF, including the cybercrime programs in CBCS. He also covers extracurricular opportunities at USF, including the Sarasota Cybersecurity Lab, and an upcoming club he is developing for students interested in cybercrime.

Criminology alum honored with prestigious award from Office of Graduate Studies

Amanda Connella, MA, a 2023 graduate of the Department of Criminology, is one of four recipients of the 2023 Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Award. The Office of Graduate Studies views this as the highest award they give to USF graduate students. The selection committee was impressed with the theme of Connella's research and the extent of her professional development to date.

CBCS faculty awarded tenure and promotion


During the CBCS Fall 2023 Assembly held Friday afternoon, multiple CBCS faculty were honored for receiving tenure and promotion within the college. Kosyluk and Galea Peru

MHLP and social work faculty share expertise on mental health and HIV stigma in Peru


Kristin Kosyluk, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy (MHLP) and recipient of the Spring 2023 CBCS International Collaboration Award, traveled to Lima, Peru with Jerome Galea, PhD, an associate professor of social work, to visit Global Mental Health projects. During the visit, the team gave multiple talks on mental health and HIV stigma for medical professionals and community representatives. Their discussions prompted plans for future collaborations centering on HIV and mental health stigma reduction research projects. Read more.

CSD students volunteer at Southshore Bilingual Therapy


Members of the Minority Students in the Communication Sciences and Disorders club and undergraduate students in the Language, Speech, and Hearing program recently volunteered at Southshore Bilingual Therapy, where they assisted with Inspira Tampa’s Community Fall Festival. This event provided fun activities and information for many low socioeconomic and culturally diverse families. The students also had an opportunity to observe speech-language pathologists perform free speech and language screenings.

Criminology faculty lead cybercrime workshop for law enforcement personnel


Tom Hyslip, PhD, an assistant professor of instruction in the Department of Criminology, coordinated the Cybercrime Investigation for Florida Law Enforcement workshops on behalf of the Florida Center for Cybersecurity. The workshops present the latest insights, methodologies, and updates related to cybercrime. C. Jordan Howell, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Criminology, is also presenting his research on open source intelligence at each conference. The first workshop was held Oct. 5 in Tampa, and the two remaining are Oct. 19 in Miami and Oct. 26 in Orlando. Over the past 11 years, the Tampa Midtown Rotary Club has raised over $200,000 with its annual Cycling for Autism event to support individuals in our community who have an autism spectrum disorder. Proceeds this year will benefit the Applied Behavior Analysis Program and the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities at the University of South Florida, and the Tampa Midtown Rotary Foundation.

The purpose of the Activist Lab Boot Camp is to provide an advocacy education and practice program. The boot camp is centered around particular public health issues with the opportunity for participants to learn from experts in the field. This year’s boot camp is focused on suicide prevention. Call for Participants:  Interactive, SMS-based Chatbot Program


Alexandra Albizu-Jacob, MPH, a CBCS doctoral candidate and graduate research assistant, is seeking USF college students experiencing test anxiety, social anxiety, depression or other mental health challenges to participate in their study involving an interactive, SMS-based chatbot program. The research study includes interacting with the chatbot program over three sessions and providing feedback on the prototype.
