ABA assistant professor of instruction elected to ABAI special interest group board |
Jesse DePaolo, PhD, BCBA-D, assistant professor of instruction for the online Master of Arts in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), was elected to serve on the board of directors for the Behavior Analysis in Health, Sport, and Fitness Special Interest Group of the Association of Behavior Analysis International (ABAI). This group supports behavior analysts and others working to address human challenges in health, sport, and fitness through the application of the science of behavior analysis. DePaolo will serve as the treasurer and secretary of the special interest group.

Aging Studies student and veteran awarded 2022 Tillman Scholarship |
Rio Tate, a PhD student in the School of Aging Studies and U.S. Air Force veteran, was awarded a 2022 Tillman Scholarship through the Pat Tillman Foundation. Tate is among a prestigious group of 60 U.S. service members, veterans, and military spouses to earn this recognition. He is the only student from a Florida public university in this year’s class of recipients.

Feature: Criminology associate professor wants to level the playing field
Fawn Ngo, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Criminology, was featured in an article by USF Sarasota-Manatee news. The story follows her journey from leaving Vietnam with her family as refugees following the fall of Saigon at the end of the Vietnam War to earning her doctorate degree and becoming an associate professor. It details her research interests and desire to promote racial equity and justice for crime victims. Read the article here.
The article also recounts how she goes above and beyond to support her students, and includes a video telling the success story of Ngo's student Gary Ernneus, a former corrections officer who became visually impaired when an inmate detonated a homemade bomb. ABA assistant professor of instruction to serve on editorial board
Anthony Concepcion, PhD, BCBA-D, assistant professor of instruction and interim program coordinator of the online Master of Arts in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), was invited to serve on the editorial board for the Journal of Educators Online (JEO). JEO is a triennial publication that highlights research in the broad area of computer mediated learning, which includes distance, online, electronic, virtual, distributed, blended, and mobile learning. During his term, Concepcion will assist the editorial board in advising the scope and direction of the journal, recommending peer reviewers and reviewing manuscripts, and editing the final draft.

New behavioral health equity resource library established
A new resource library provides a searchable database pertaining to integrated behavioral health care, organizational cultural competence, and best practices for promoting health equity and reducing disparities within underserved populations and communities. The Behavioral Health Equity Resource Library was developed to provide scholars in the Behavioral Health Workforce Education & Training Program at USF access to interdisciplinary resources to enhance knowledge and support their training in the program. The searchable library will be updated regularly and will highlight integrated behavioral health resources regularly for trainees and all those interested in promoting equity in behavioral health care. ABA doctoral student joins ABAI DEI board
Daniel Kwak, MS, BCBA was invited to serve on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) board for the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI). The mission of the board is to foster and develop an inclusive, equitable, and just environment for all individuals and groups within the science and practice of behavior analysis and beyond. During his three-year term, Kwak will work to implement practices that support and respect diversity of identity and experience, evaluate the impact of ABAI’s DEI initiatives, provide recommendations, and more. As a PhD student on the board, Kwak hopes to address issues that extend across many areas of need and increase diversity within the ABA field at all levels of certification. Read more.

Students recount experiences studying abroad in Spain
This year, after a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19, School of Social Work faculty Iraida V. Carrion, PhD, LCSW and Manisha Joshi, PhD, MPH, MSW resumed their study abroad program to Spain with fifteen eager students. During the two-week field experience in Spain, the participating students (a mix of undergraduate and graduate students from different majors) examined the socio-cultural context of people’s health in Alicante and Granada. They visited a variety of organizations including a hospital, community health center, school, International Red Cross facility, universities, and more. The visits were both informative and engaging and allowed students an opportunity to interact with guest speakers including university students.
