MHLP assistant professor wins poster competition

Micah Johnson, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy, and his colleagues won the Future of Pediatric Practice 2022 Resident Forum Poster Competition in the Original Research category of the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The study was titled "Current opioid misuse among justice-involved children: The effect of adverse childhood experiences." Johnson worked with Ayodeji Otufowora, MD, PhD, MPH and Piyush Chaudhari, MPH on the study.

Aging studies student receives grant for dementia research

Monica Nelson, a fourth-year PhD candidate in the School of Aging Studies, received a Ruth L. Kirschstein Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award for her project titled, “Contribution of Contextual Factors and Neuropathology to Dementia." Monica will use the grant to complete her dissertation focused on investigating biological and contextual risk factors for incident dementia.

CIBR Lab receives grant from Cyber Florida


The Department of Criminology received $79,200 from Cyber Florida to fund the Cybercrime Interdisciplinary Behavioral Research Laboratory (CIBR Lab). George Burruss, PhD, who directs CIBR Lab, said the money will be used to fund three graduate students who will manage various research projects and help develop research tools to study the problem of cybercrime and online victimization. Lab-affiliated faculty from the Department of Criminology and other disciplines work with undergraduate and graduate students to teach research and analysis skills. The lab is open to students from any major interested in cyber criminology and cybersecurity. Information about joining can be found on the lab’s website.

CSD students start graduate NSSLHA chapter


Graduate students in the MS in Speech-Language Pathology program are starting a graduate chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) at USF. NSSLHA is a national student organization for pre-professionals studying communication sciences and disorders (CSD) recognized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Students hope this chapter will serve to support and connect members with fellow students in the program, professionals in the field, and the community overall. The chapter plans to hold events focused on advocacy, community outreach, and professional development and provide opportunities for networking and student leadership.
