Emeritus professors Mary Armstrong, PhD and Roger Boothroyd, PhD have continued their dedication to the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) and the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences by naming two special projects in their will. Once realized, their gift will increase the impact of The Moms Project and help fund an executive director position within FMHI.

Social work student selected for ALLSWE scholarship | |
Social work student Daniela De Santiago received a scholarship from the Association of Latino and Latina Social Work Educators (ALLSWE). The scholarship is awarded to students who are leaders in the field of social work and are working toward an impactful career. She is one of the twelve recipients of the award. "The ALLSWE award is an honor that will keep me motivated to accomplish my goal of making a difference in the world," De Santiago said.

Students fight mental health stigma through performance
Ten brave USF students, including three CBCS students, took to the stage Friday night to share stories of their lived experiences with mental illness and addiction. Through dance, essay, song, poetry, and comedy, the cast worked together to combat the stigma associated with mental illness and addiction and prove that storytelling saves lives. Department of Mental Health Law and Policy Assistant Professor Kristin Kosyluk, PhD, produced and directed the show. The production was also supported by many CBCS faculty, staff, and students who served on the production team, including Patty Harrison, Molly Urnek, Ciara Spivey, B. Michelle Wilks, Margaret McGladrey, PhD, and Precious Goodson.

Justine Leigh: Helping students navigate their self-discovery journeys
As the academic advisor for the BSW program at the USF School of Social Work, Justine Leigh encourages students to pursue their passions and develop soft skills necessary for job acquisition and stresses the importance of exploration. FMHI presents "Shatterproofing Communities with Brave Conversations"
The Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) hosted a conversation last Thursday on the role storytelling can play in protecting and strengthening our communities. Speakers included Erin Gallagher, executive director of This Is My Brave; Courtney McKeon, vice president, national stigma initiative, from Shatterproof; Department of Mental Health Law and Policy Assistant Professor Kristin Kosyluk, PhD, who spoke about the This Is My Brave evidence base and Photovoice; and Michelle Mangum, director of state engagement at Shatterproof, who shared Shatterproof's Addiction Treatment Locator Assessments and Standards (ATLAS) platform. ATLAS helps people search for and compare addiction treatment facilities to find care.

Department of Criminology honors faculty, alumni, community partners, students
The Department of Criminology hosted its annual induction of its Wall of Fame honorees last Friday in the Gibbons Alumni Center. In celebration of the department's 50th anniversary, Bill Blount, PhD and Kathleen Heide, PhD spoke about the history and growth of the criminology programs at USF over the decades. Read more.

School of Aging Studies hosts conference on advance care planning
Presented by the Center for Hospice, Palliative Care and End of Life Studies and the Florida Policy Exchange Center on Aging, The Enhancing Care and Communication at the End-of Life: Best Practices in Advance Care Planning Conference took place last Friday in the USF Embassy Suites Hotel. The conference included sessions on the importance of values and preferences in planning for end-of-life care, capacity evaluations and pitfalls of advance care planning in different health care settings, small group discussions, and more. The event also served as a health care jobs fair and offered 5.5 Continuing Education Units to attendees. Read more.

Town hall showcases CBCS DEI research and initiatives
Recipients of the DEI Awards showcased the findings of their funded research projects that focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion at Friday afternoon's town hall. Department of Mental Health Law and Policy faculty Kyaien Conner, PhD, Khary Rigg, PhD, and Micah Johnson, PhD presented their findings, as well as Department of Child and Family Studies Assistant in Research Ruby Joseph, MPA. Representatives of the CBCS DEI Committee also discussed the demographics of CBCS students and employees and strategies to improve diverse initiatives, recruitment, and retention in the college. At the end of the town hall, Dean Serovich and Catia Cividini-Motta, PhD, BCBA-D thanked Kyaien Conner for serving as the special assistant to the dean on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
