MHLP assistant professor and students appear on USF podcast

Kristin Kosyluk, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Mental Health Law & Policy, was joined by USF students Christian Marquez and Katrina Paschke on Inside USF: The Podcast last Friday to discuss the mental health crisis in the U.S. The two students shared their lived experiences with mental illness and stigma, and Kosyluk provided professional and personal insights. 


Marquez and Paschke were members of the cast, and Kosyluk served as lead producer, of This Is My Brave; College Edition, a OneUSF Production, which brought stories of mental illness into the spotlight to break down stigma. The content of This Is My Brave – College Edition, a OneUSF Production was created under the Department of Education’s arts learning grant, REACH (Race, Equity, Arts and Cultural History), and has also received generous support from the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute. Listen to the episode here.

CBCS students awarded Trail Blazers Research Scholarship


Six CBCS students were awarded the Trail Blazers Research Scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year. This scholarship supports graduate student research on the Sarasota-Manatee campus under the direction of their faculty mentors.


From the Department of Criminology, Emily Walker and Taylor Fisher received their first year of funding, and Amanda Connella received her second year of funding. Representing the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders, Madison Dowdy received the scholarship for the first time and Cruz Reyes received it for a second time. Tram Tran, a Behavioral and Community Sciences doctoral student, was also awarded the scholarship for the second year in a row. Read more.

Social Work professor speaks at conference in Norway


Alison Salloum, PhD, LCSW, a professor in the School of Social Work, was the keynote speaker at the Norwegian Centre for Violence and Traumatic Stress Studies (NCVTSS) conference in Oslo, Norway. Salloum presented "Stepped Care Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Building for the Future/Empowering Caregivers and Increasing Accessibility of Evidence-based Practices." Prior to the conference, Salloum met with the NCVTSS stepped care research team to discuss current findings and future research on stepped care trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy.

CSD associate instructor leads students on Swiss adventure


Faculty and students recently returned from a week-long adventure examining the impact of language on daily activities and interactions in Switzerland. The USF Switzerland Linguistic and Cultural Diversity program gives students the opportunity to explore how cultural and linguistic diversity affects aspects of social, professional, and economic life. Samantha Thomas, MA, NIC, associate instructor in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD) shared a first-hand account of the study abroad experience. Read more.

Group Music Therapy Study

Aging Studies researchers study group-based music intervention's impact on the behavior of adults with dementia


In a new study from the School of Aging Studies, researchers found that group-based interventions with pre-recorded music benefited people with dementia in ways similar to those found with individual-based interventions. These group-based interventions are particularly well suited for senior living communities, including assisted living communities because they require fewer resources than individual music therapy and are likely to be cost-effective, increasing the likelihood of wider adoption. Prioritizing You Women's Health Event

ARCT Lab participates in women's health event


Representatives from the Auditory Rehabilitation and Clinical Trials (ARCT) Lab attended "Prioritizing You," an evening of research and insight on women's health hosted by the USF Women’s Health Collaborative and PNC Bank. Victoria Sanchez, AuD, PhD, CCC-A, research assistant professor in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders, Charity Lewis, and Julia Toman, MD with USF Health, attended the special reception and panel discussion in honor of National Women's Health Week. Social Work student receives undergraduate research assistantship


Social Work student Jessica Doiron received an undergraduate research assistantship for Summer 2022. Jessica will work under the mentorship of Alison Salloum, PhD.


The CBCS undergraduate research assistantship provides funding to undergrads to work with CBCS faculty on research projects for one semester. These assistantships are awarded every semester and are designed to support undergraduate students conducting research. Fall 2022 applications are still being accepted until May 31, 2022. CRMHC graduates present at FLAPSE conference 


Graduates from the Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling (CRMHC) program recently presented at the Maximizing Employment for Individuals with Disabilities: 4th Statewide Conference Focused on Advancing Employment For Persons with Disabilities. The conference was hosted by the Florida Association of People Supporting Employment First (FLAPSE) in collaboration with Georgia APSE, state divisions of the National APSE Organization. It provided valuable employment-focused training while providing a forum for participants to connect with one another, speakers, and subject matter experts, all who support and work toward equitable employment for all.
