National Training Institute on Effective Practices draws over 1,000 conference attendees


Over one thousand individuals attended the National Training Institute on Effective Practices: Addressing Challenging Behavior conference. The annual conference, which has doubled in size over the last decade and sold out in a record four days this year, is hosted by the National Center for Pyramid Model Innovations, an organization of which Lise Fox, PhD, chair of the Department of Child and Family Studies, is the principal investigator. Aging studies retired faculty member honored for 47 years of service


Long-time retired School of Aging Studies faculty member Mary Jean Etten, EdD, ARNP, was recently honored for her 47 years of service on the board of Empath Health and as a founding member of Suncoast Hospice of Florida. She was presented the award by Jonathan Fleece (middle), president and CEO of Empath Health-Stratum, and Ben Hayes (right), the organization's chief operating officer.

SMART Lab 2024

SMART Lab wraps up another year of conducting pioneering substance misuse research


Students in the Substance Misuse and Research Traineeship (SMART) lab, an initiative of the Johnson Lab led by Department of Mental Health Law and Policy Assistant Professor Micah Johnson, PhD, recently shared their research and celebrated their achievements. The lab members not only showcased their work at the SMART Research Symposium and Banquet, but 12 of them also participated in the OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference. Read more.

CBCS students admitted to doctoral candidacy


Two PhD students in the Behavioral and Community Sciences PhD program have been admitted to doctoral candidacy.


Kimberly Menendez has a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Florida and a Master of Science in forensic psychology from Walden University. Her research interests are in adolescent drug and violence prevention, social emotional learning development, implementation science in behavioral health, and evidence-based programs in school settings.


Tracy Bales has a Bachelor of Arts in design from the College of Architecture at the University of Florida, a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of South Florida, and a Masters of Public Health with a concentration in behavioral health from the University of South Florida. Her research interests are in behavioral economics in health; implementation science in behavioral health; health communication, decision-making, and goal-setting behavior; and the effect of art and environmental context on well-being.

Terra Gaucha Flood Donation Drive

The Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil is currently experiencing a flooding emergency. Record rainfall has flooded entire cities and displaced nearly 150,000 people. The USF School of Social Work will be accepting donations of the following items until Wednesday, May 15: bed linens, pillows, bath linens, inflatable mattresses, clothing, shoes, hygiene products, geriatric diapers, children’s diapers, and toys.


Please drop off all donations into the cardboard box located in the School of Social Work MHC1400 wing – outside of room MHC1405.
