Tammy Jorgensen Smith, PhD, CRC, an associate professor in the Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling (CRMHC) program, has been invited to serve as an associate editor for Frontiers in Rehabilitation Sciences. In this role, Smith will join a team of top international experts managing the peer review of relevant manuscripts submitted to Work Rehabilitation and contributing to the strategic direction of the section by suggesting and co-leading featured article collections in her area of expertise.

Social work associate instructor joins Council on Faculty Issues | |
Melissa Thompson, MSW, LCSW, an associate instructor in the School of Social Work is a new voting member of the USF Council on Faculty Issues. Thompson has been approved to serve a three-year term, effective until the end of the spring semester in 2026. The Council on Faculty Issues advises the provost and senior vice president for USF Health on matters that impact the welfare of faculty. Duties include examining and initiating USF policies and procedures that impact faculty, including tenure and promotion, sustained performance review, and incentive and excellence programs.

Social work group documents travels through Spain in online blog
A group of social work students curated a blog titled "USF Social Work in Spain 2023: Sociocultural Context of the People's Health" to journal the daily activities of their study abroad experiences. The students traveled to Alicante, Granada, and other cities around the country where they visited a school, social services center, hospital, historical landmarks, and other sites. The group also attended the Congreso Internacional de Terapia Ocupacional Conference, where Manisha Joshi, PhD, MPH, MSW; Iraida Carrion, PhD, LCSW; Paul Muñoz; and Megan Jarvis presented their research that examined the role of occupational therapy in the practice of social work in the U.S. Read the blog.

Discussing the depth and breadth of advocacy with NASW-FL's executive director
Dawn Brown, MSW is the current executive director of the National Association of Social Workers - Florida (NASW-FL) and the Virgin Islands and a member of the Association of Black Social Workers - Jacksonville Chapter. Dubbed the “Macro Maniac” by her MSW cohort at USF, Brown has paved an impactful and inspirational career path in macro social work while simultaneously centering micro and mezzo in everything that she does, as she argues one cannot exist without the other.
In this episode, Brown and Chris Groeber, MSW, associate in research in the School of Social Work, discuss the call to advocate, the social work code of ethics, professional obligation, and how to speak the language of equity and social justice. Aging studies research assistant professor shares expertise on caregiver disaster preparedness
Lindsay Peterson, PhD, a research assistant professor in the School of Aging Studies, presented her research on caregiver disaster preparedness at the 8th Annual Senior Education Summit, organized by the Rath Senior ConNEXTions Center. Older adults from across central Florida listened intently as Peterson and other presenters discussed resilience and other social determinants of health. Peterson expressed that disaster readiness improves resilience, especially for caregivers and the people they care for.

Virtual 2023 Summer Institute: Strategies to Support School-Aged Children with Severe Emotional and Behavioral Disorders
June 2, 9, & 30 | 9 a.m. - noon
The first presentation will provide an overview of trauma-informed care in educational settings. The second presentation will introduce a systems of care approach to promote family-school collaboration in the problem-solving process when addressing mental health concerns of students.
The third presentation will provide an overview of assistive technology (AT) and introduce multiple levels of AT and instructional technologies that can be incorporated into lives of children with disabilities to enhance their learning and promote success in schools.
