Colby Valentine, PhD received the 2022 Dr. Kathleen Moore Faculty Excellence Award from
USF Women in Leadership and Philanthropy to further her research endeavors. This award recognizes outstanding female faculty who have displayed achievements in research, instructional excellence, and student engagement. Valentine's project, Journey Homeward, focuses on a family reunification and reintegration program for girls exploited in human trafficking.

CSD assistant professor recognized for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion | |
Michelle Arnold, PhD, AuD, CCC-A has been awarded the 2022 Inclusive Excellence Faculty Award from the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for her outstanding contributions in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Dr. Arnold was honored at the Inclusive Excellence Awards ceremony, which was held last Tuesday in the Marshall Student Center Ballroom. Dr. Arnold was nominated by students she mentors who are from under-represented backgrounds, as well as faculty colleagues.

Students, faculty, and staff recognized at Spring Assembly
Several awards were presented at last Friday's CBCS Spring Assembly. Employee Recognition Awards were given to Sheryl Stire (Mental Health Law and Policy) and Kayvrie Vega (Communication Sciences and Disorders).
The Dean's Awards for Faculty and Students were presented by Associate Dean Jennifer Lister, PhD, CCC-A, FAAA. These awards recognize the members of the college who have demonstrated exemplary service, teaching, research, and dedication to advancing CBCS.

Multiple members of CBCS selected as winners of 2022 Undergraduate Research Conference
Last week, CBCS students presented their research at the 2022 Undergraduate Research Conference and were commended for their outstanding work. Joseph Walton, PhD received the Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research, and Megan Kirby, MEd, BCBA received honorable mention for the Graduate/Professional Student Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research.
Representing Language, Speech & Hearing Sciences, Lena Bayyat and Jade Brown received the Audience Choice Award for the Tampa Research Showcase for their research titled, "The Relationship Between the Perceptual Accessibility of Vocabulary and K-3 Students’ Narrative and Expository Language." Megan Kirby and Matthew Foster, PhD served as their project mentors.

Social Work faculty receive USF New Researcher Grant Award
Dasha Rhodes, PhD, LMSW and Jerome Galea, PhD were awarded $10,000 as part of the USF New Researcher Grant Award. Rhodes received the award for her study titled, "Exploring Social Workers Job Preparedness in Law Enforcement Agencies." Galea received the award for his project titled, "From ambivalence to action – using a conversational agent or 'chatbot' to support smoking cessation: a proof-of-concept study." Galea is working alongside College of Nursing Associate Professor Uma Nair, PhD on this study.

CSD celebrates Audiology Research Day
Five audiology students showcased their work for Audiology Research Day, celebrated in March. The third-year students presented the results of their audiology doctoral projects. Each student was introduced by a CSD faculty member and proudly represented the program with their outstanding contributions to audiology research. The USF Doctorate of Audiology program was recently ranked #18 by U.S. News & World Report. Find more photos of the presentations here.

CARD-USF Autism Friendly team recognized by Tampa City Council
The Tampa City Council recognized the CARD-USF Autism Friendly team for their commitment to making Tampa a welcoming and safe community for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. CARD-USF partnered with the Autism Friendly Tampa committee in 2017 and has since been providing training and resources to thousands of City of Tampa employees and business professionals. Thanks to their work, rescue vehicles for Tampa PD and Fire Rescue are now equipped with visual cue cards to facilitate communication with individuals with limited speech. Read more.

Save the date: 2021 Distinguished University Professor Lecture
Join School of Aging Studies Professor Bill Haley, PhD on April 25 for his lecture: "The Effects of Family Caregiving for Older Adults on Mental and Physical Health: A 40-Year Research Adventure." Haley's research addresses significant questions with regard to the problems, issues, and coping strategies of caregivers of family members with chronic illness and disability. The presentation will be held in the Patel Center for Global Solutions but will also be live-streamed on Microsoft Teams. Read more.

CRMHC hosts exchange scholars from NCUE in Taiwan
Five exchange scholars sponsored by the Taiwanese government have been participating in a cultural exchange program this semester at USF. They are students in the Graduate Institute of Rehabilitation Counseling at National Changhua University of Education (NCUE) in Taiwan, a partner with the USF Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling (CRMHC) program. The Rehabilitation Counseling Institute at NCUE is the first local institute aimed at cultivating the development of rehabilitation counseling professionals. It was created to provide training and academic research to enable professionals to increase their expertise, upgrade their service quality, as well as promote equal rights and social opportunities for people with disabilities. Audiology students awarded T35 research traineeships
Two second-year audiology students have been awarded T35 research traineeships, which are institutional short-term training research grants for clinical audiologists. Jessica Combs has accepted a research training experience at the Boys Town National Research Hospital and will be working in Dr. Monita Chatterjee’s lab. Cruz Reyes will be at Vanderbilt University in Dr. Linda Hood's lab. Congratulations, Jessica and Cruz!
