NCG Guest Speaker on Food Inflation
By Andrew Muller
The Board recently received an amazing presentation from Tony Alongi from National Co+op Grocers (NCG) on the issue of Inflation in Grocery and Co-ops. Tony provided the Board with very interesting information, including the latest news about inflation and providing ideas on what Co-ops can do to help with this problem. Hopefully this article can help to illuminate this issue.

Taste of China Demonstration - Sichuan Cuisine
This is the second in the 3-part Taste of China In Person Class Series taught by Paul Young! Originating in Southwest China, Sichuan cuisine is the most popular cuisine in China. Famous for its spicy recipes, Sichuan dishes have strong flavors that are anything but subtle. In this class, we'll learn how to combine garlic, chilies and the famous Sichuan peppercorn (also known as the "numbing spice") which is the soul of Sichuan dishes. Let's deconstruct the flavor profiles of some popular Sichuan dishes such as:
- Pig Ear in Chili Oil
- Kung Pao Chicken
- Ma Po Tofu
- Sichuan Fried Rice
This class will take place in the Common Ground Flatlander Classroom on Tuesday, October 11th from 6 - 8:30 pm.

Common Ground Food Co-op Partners Local Farmers, Residents and Neighbors in Need
|
Grace Finnell-Gudwien, a student at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, recently wrote a feature article on Common Ground and it's mission!
Last month we raised just over $4,000 for Immigrant Services of Champaign-Urbana!
SGF has consistently provided at least 20-30% of their fresh vegetable harvest to our local foodbank, food pantries, soup kitchens, little free markets and pantries and special requests and events. They offer educational and outreach support in our community so that neighbors in need have an opportunity to learn more about and engage in food production, food preparation and food enjoyment. Much our their mission-related work is made possible through donations and grants. Thank you for your support!

October's Round Up For Good organization is Courage Connection.
Mission: Courage Connection is committed to ensuring every member of our community has the education and resources to live in safe healthy relationships.
Project Proposal: "We understand that for our organization to provide lasting change outreach and education have to be a major priority. Over the year we have developed a youth outreach program called RESPECT. It is a 7th-grade curriculum that teaches the dynamics of relationships violence, the importance of self-love, and bystander intervention. We will use this money to grow this program. We would like to see this program in every middle school in the 4 counties we serve.

Apple & Cheese Beer Soup with Soft Pretzel Bites

As the weather gradually turns colder, we thought it would be the perfect time for a hearty and warming soup recipe! This recipe has so many different flavors and features lots of seasonal items we have at the Co-op right now. For the beer, we chose the Left Hand Pumpkin Latte Nitro Ale, but any pumpkin beer would work well with this. We also decided to feature a brand new product, the Eastern Standard frozen pretzel bites, to pair with this recipe!
Co+op Basics:
French Toast with Oats & Berry Syrup

Eastern Standard Soft Pretzel Bites |
These pretzel bites have the same light, airy qualities of a brioche inside, and the traditional Bavarian-style pretzel crust outside. Check out our Apple & Beer cheese soup recipe above for the perfect pairing!
