Dear Kappa Sigma Tau Alumni and Parents,

In our letter dated March 19, we committed to you to review the culture of the Tau Chapter and re-align any practices that were found to be inconsistent with the ideals of the Fraternity. This review was prompted by the death of our brother, Nicky Cumberland, who died from injuries he sustained in a car accident following another student organization’s event.

Several alumni joined actives of Tau Chapter to review the overall membership over the course of several weekends last spring and reported our findings to Kappa Sigma Fraternity (national). We have taken further steps to reiterate that hazing — as defined by the Code of Conduct, The University of Texas, and the newly amended anti-hazing bill signed into law by Governor Abbott in August 2019 — is strictly forbidden.

We have jointly supported numerous restrictions regarding alcohol and controlled substances and have implemented other risk-management policies to enhance the safety of all of our Chapter members.

On September 21, alumni met with the 2019 Tau Chapter pledge class, an exceptional group of 42 young men from across the U.S. with outstanding academic, athletic and leadership accomplishments to their credit. We will work diligently to help them have a successful and enriching college experience.

Kappa Sigma remains in the top tier of UT’s social fraternities since 1884, with an active alumni base of more than 1,500 members residing throughout Texas and beyond. Today’s Chapter has more than 125 members.

The entrepreneurial spirit has guided the success and achievement of our members and endures as our legacy. Currently, Kappa Sigma maintains a collective GPA of 3.2, one of the highest among UT’s large fraternities. We also bring focus to leadership and involvement in student and service organizations such as Student and Fraternity Government, the Silver Spurs, and many other service, philanthropic and academic organizations within the University and Austin community.

We look forward to seeing you at Kappa Sigma Parents’ Weekend on November 8 and 9.
