MAGIS Society Induction Ceremony to Recognizes Excellence in Teaching

The first event of School of Medicine’s Graduation Week, the 19th Annual MAGIS Society Induction Ceremony will honor Mary Furlong, MD, and Amy Burke, MD. The ceremony will take place Thursday, May 18 at 5:00 p.m. in the Pre-Clinical Science Building, LA-6.

In celebration of the Class of 2023, leaders with expertise in public health, epidemiology and academia will offer words of wisdom for graduates at their commencement ceremonies.
With more than 33 years of experience in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, Orsega is the longest serving Public Health Service officer and the Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Health and the U.S. Surgeon General.
A physician and epidemiologist, Jones has dedicated her career to empowering people to improve community health by eradicating racism, laying the groundwork for more than 260 jurisdictions to issue declarations recognizing that “racism is a public health crisis.”
School of Medicine: Joan Y. Reede, MD, MS, MPH, MBA
The inaugural Dean for Diversity and Community Partnership at Harvard Medical School, Reede has created and led programs that encourage individuals from groups underrepresented in science to pursue careers in medicine, research and health care.

Feature Stories
Before arriving at Georgetown’s campus in Washington, D.C., Chinmayee Mehta (G’23) worked at a biotechnology lab in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, helping to safeguard the food and water of one of the world’s most visited destinations.
More than 1,000 participants attended the May 8 symposium, a full-day event with more than 350 juried poster presentations, dozens of oral presentations, an educational colloquium and numerous academic workshops.

The Center for Innovation and Leadership in Education (CENTILE) program committee selected Krista White, PhD, RN, CCRN-K, CNE (right), Lisa Ruth-Sahd, DEd, RN, CEN, CCRN, CNE (left), and Peggy Slota, MN, DNP, as recipients of its Best Oral Abstract Award. Their work, "Self-Directedness, Grit, and Compassionate Teaching in Doctoral Nursing Education," was presented during the May 8 Georgetown-MedStar Education Colloquium, part of the MedStar Health – Georgetown University Research and Education Symposium.

The application deadline for postdoctoral fellows to join the 2023-24 NIH TL1 Translational Biomedical Science (TBS) Training Program has been extended. The program is funded by the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science (GHUCCTS). Postdoctoral fellows who have a primary appointment at either Georgetown, Howard, a MedStar institution or the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center are encouraged to apply by June 30.
Medical school mentors are needed for the Gateway Exploration Program, a summer pipeline program for high school students from underrepresented backgrounds who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine. Mentors must be available in person June 26 - August 4 for 1-2 hours per week. Apply here by May 19.
