I’ll be sleeping on the cold hard ground in Central City Park Thursday, February 23rd with dozens of other campers, some who have participated in this annual Greater Macon Sleepout for ten straight years. We will be raising money for Daybreak DePaul, Macon’s Catholic-sponsored interfaith day resource center for the homeless. This Walnut Street ministry is renowned nationally; other cities, including Los Angeles, are trying to replicate what we do here.
Having found a convenient excuse to avoid pitching my tent in the past, last year God made it clear I should find my sleeping bag. When I did so, God must have spoken to you, too, because your generosity made me the largest fundraiser of all last year’s participants. As a reward Daybreak added me to the Sleepout Committee!
Daybreak is currently building, in partnership with Macon-Bibb Housing Authority, a facility to provide low-income housing and respite care for homeless persons. This is in addition to their daily ministry that has provided over 10,000 people with showers, laundry, breakfast, nursing care and the merciful love of God in Christ Jesus.
Joined by homeless persons, I will proudly sleep out again this February, and I am not the only Mulberry member who loves this ministry. Many of you have volunteered at the Walnut Street facility. Church members Emory Dunn and Carol Seegert will also be tenting.
Last year I raised over $7,000 for Daybreak. I hope, with your generosity, to exceed that goal. You can easily contribute to this cause by accessing my fundraising page at this link: https://depaulusa.networkforgood.com/projects/179107-creede-hinshaw-s-fundraiser
Or you can write a check to the church and designate it for Daybreak Sleepout. Many of you, both individuals and groups, have already made contributions.
There is still time to pitch your tent at the Sleepout. If you can’t do that (I understand, having avoided the February cold for 9 years) a sizeable contribution will atone.
