RIP Medical Debt!

We are healers.

That’s the theme for stewardship this year. At Mulberry St. UMC, we foster healing for the broken places of life; a reality we see lived out every day through Sunday School classes, at Macon Outreach, in our Children’s Center, and in events like the Service of Unity and Love back in July, when we stood together with many from around Macon against the hatred of anti-Semitism.

This kind of reflection on the difference Mulberry makes is essential to a stewardship campaign. Throughout the next few weeks, we’ll be hearing stories of that difference and celebrating how we foster healing for the communities we serve.

But why wait? Today, you can make a huge, healing, difference for our neighbors across Macon-Bibb County and beyond, with your donation making a 200% difference!

Here’s how it works. We’ve partnered with RIP Medical Debt; a Christian debt-collection agency. Medical debt more than twenty-four months old is often sold by providers on a marketplace to debt-collectors. This debt is usually sold for pennies on the dollar by the provider. The debt collection agency then seeks repayment of the debt from the consumer, often using predatory behavior to do so.

RIP Medical debt buys off the same marketplace as other debt collectors but, instead of seeking repayment from consumers, they seek out churches to pay off the debt. The amount they ask from the churches is almost the same amount as what they paid for the debt.

For us, this means our giving can make a 200% difference. We’re seeking to raise $12,000, expecting to pay off $1,000,000 of medical debt! Should we meet our goal, RIP Medical debt will purchase $10,000 worth of debt off the marketplace. Mindful that they pay pennies on the dollar for that debt, that $10,000 will represent around $1,000,000 of debt. We then pay them an additional $2,000 for their administrative costs.

Thanks to a generous donation, we have received a $6,000 matching grant. When you give at any amount, your $10 becomes $20 and your $500 becomes $1,000. Then, that same $10 pays off about $20,000 of medical debt for one of our neighbors and that $1,000 pays off about $200,000 of debt!

RIP Medical Debt will purchase debt from residents of Macon-Bibb and surrounding counties; our neighbors. They will receive notice that Mulberry Street United Methodist Church has paid their debt in full. What a powerful witness to the healing difference we make.

2023 Stewardship Begins This Sunday!

September 17-October 8

Our 2023 Stewardship Campaign will focus on how, at Mulberry, “We Are Healers.“ We will spend the next three weeks telling the story of Mulberry and how your giving makes a difference as we live out our mission. You’ll also hear about our new “shared rhythms” of weekly worship, weekly discipleship, monthly service, and monthly giving. These are rhythms that we as members adopt in order to grow in our faith, our relationship with our church family, and our capacity to serve our community. Learn more at mulberrymethodist.org/stewardship.

Together we are sharing the heart of God...
