Update to Air Quality Index and Recommendations

Earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) made updates to the Air Quality Index (AQI) for fine particle pollution; namely, changing the amount of pollution per cubic meter of air that would trigger certain air quality categories, such as good, moderate, unhealthy for sensitive groups, and so on.

In response to these changes, the Washington State Department of Health has also made updates to the recommendations for outdoor youth activity during periods when air quality is affected. These recommendations can also carry over to provide helpful guidance for outdoor duties or activities that may involve employees, volunteers, or clients. With wildfire season on the way, we encourage our members to take some time to review the new guidelines available for deciding when to allow, modify, or restrict outdoor activities such as outdoor fundraising events, athletic practices and games, before and after school programs, camps, field trips, and more.

Based on the EPA's recent changes to AQI, we anticipate experiencing many days in the Moderate (Yellow) AQI category this year. We recommend planning now for more frequent use of indoor spaces for children and youth, as well as any other individuals with health conditions that make them particularly sensitive to air pollution and smoke.
