COMMUNITY AND REGIONAL PLANNING

Community and Regional Planning Professor and Director Zhenghong Tang presented his team’s research findings to the Nebraska Saline Wetland Conservation Partnership. The research findings from Tang’s team provides solid scientific evidence of the salinity status of topsoil and inundated water in these inland saline wetlands. The findings confirmed that the salinity status on topsoil maintains at an effective salty level. The research findings support conservation effectiveness in these conserved wetlands. The current conservation practices have effectively maintained salinity topsoil in these study sites. This research was collaborated with the City of Lincoln, Lower Platte South Natural Resources District and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and funded in part by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

ARCHITECTURE

The American Institute of Architects Nebraska Mid-Year Symposium brings together architects, community leaders, suppliers, manufacturers and other design professionals to explore the industry's best practices and emerging technologies, techniques and materials. This year Jeremiah Brown, Caroline Goertz and Zitlalic Parra Valencia will present their work at the AIA-NE Mid-Symposium on Friday, April 14,, in Kearney, Nebraska. They will deliver their undergraduate and graduate design projects completed in the fourth year DSGN410 Collaborate Design studio and M.Arch final year design thesis. In DSGN410, students from architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and possibly other disciplines from outside the college come together to work on critical issues that transcend the purview of a single design discipline. The collaborative design studio engages interdisciplinary teams of fourth year students in real-world design problems and issues. At the master level, the design thesis allows students to conceive and execute an independent architectural investigation in their final year of the M.Arch Program. Design thesis investigations are instrumental in their role for future professional development and may also act as springboards for further academic pursuit.

This is an excellent way for our program and students to foster connections with the profession across the state. Please wish Jeremiah Brown, Caroline Goertz and Zitlalic Parra Valencia good luck this week!

Have a great week. -David Karle
