We have entered into the Season of Advent, the four-Sunday period of time used to help us prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth on Christmas Day. As we journey through the darkest time of the year, we wait with active anticipation for the growing light that comes with that special day. We are indeed, in many respects, in a time between the ‘now’ and the ‘not yet.’
Instead of following the traditional weekly assigned lectionary Gospel Readings this season, the Worship & Music ministry team has decided to focus specifically on Mary, the mother of Jesus. Our hope is to lift her out of her common storybook setting, as well as the role she has historically played in differing church traditions.
John Gammie has written a beautiful and meaningful liturgy for the weekly lighting of the Advent Wreath, reflecting the themes of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love, through the perspective of Mary’s story. Please note that the Chancel Choir will present a beautiful extended piece of music, The Magnificat by John Rutter during the service of Worship on Sunday, December 18. As always, we are all so very grateful for the remarkable talent of Dr. Kim Childs and Mike Gibson, our gifted Director of Music Ministry and Organist, respectively.
Finally, I encourage you to take the light of Christ that dwells among and within you, and reflect that light upon others and throughout your surroundings this season. In these changing and uncertain times, I pray for you, this congregation, our country, and the entire world that this will be a time of real and tangible hope, peace, joy and love!

Volunteers Needed for
Holiday Care Package Deliveries!
This year we are trying something a little different for delivering
Holiday Care Packages to our
congregation members that are not able to join us at church.
We will have 8-10 packages and cards that will need to be delivered, and need
individual, family, or group
volunteers to make
deliveries.

Finance & Stewardship Update
College Hill members and friends, at the end of October actual pledged income was down by $25,000 from budgeted pledges. Our budgeted income at 10/31/16 is $248,392 and we have received $223,252.
If you are behind in paying your pledged contributions your Finance and Stewardship team would appreciate your catching up.
If ever you have a need to decrease or stop the amount of your pledge, please let our Office Administrator Lisa know. We understand that situations arise that would cause you to do so. It helps us budget as we go through the rest of the year if we know we need to make changes in our projected income.
Also, if you have not turned in your pledge card for 2017, now is the time to do it! We need to get a definite income projection in order to support programs inside the church and in the community.

The Chancel Choir of College Hill Presbyterian Church rehearses Wednesdays at 6:45 p.m. in the second story choral room (next to the church office) for singing, fellowship and fun! Rehearsals have begun – and we invite YOU to be a part!

The Chancel Choir will be performing portions of the John Rutter MAGNIFICAT Sunday, December, 18 at 11 a.m. during morning worship under the direction of Dr. Kim Childs. The work features organist Mike Gibson, soprano Hannah Kangas and, of course, the Chancel Choir. You won’t want to miss this beautiful work!

An Inappropriate Christmas

In Matthew 1:1-17, there is a genealogy of the family tree that led up to Jesus. Over the course of the genealogy, the writer deliberately includes the names of four women. In a patriarchal world that considered women to be second-class citizens or property, this was an extraordinarily radical thing to do (if you read all of the other genealogies in the Bible or from any literature from the time, none of them include women). More importantly, the women included are not what anyone would ever expect… Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba…
The early followers of Jesus realized that God can bring something holy out of any human shortcoming, inadequacy, or evil. If God was not hindered by these people, surely God has not bailed on you because of your mistakes…The message of Jesus is that no one is outside the love of God, that no one is beyond redemption, and that this God did not give up on the world.

Emergency Food Pantry.
Current needs include canned vegetables and canned fruit, as well as other non-perishable food items.

A meaningful way to celebrate your Birthday this year is to
