Collaborative Connection: April 28, 2022
Child Abuse Prevention Month
Mental Health Awareness Month
April is National Child Abuse Month and May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. With April wrapping up and May about to begin, it is important for all of us to remember that the need for advocacy toward both initiatives is perpetual.

Did you know that…

  • 3 in 5 adults in Georgia have experienced at least one Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE)? This alarming statistic also mirrors national data.
  • Those who have experienced ACEs are more likely to experience longer-term physical ailments such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, obesity, suicide and more? Persistent exposure to one or more ACEs as a child or adolescent can cause prolonged activation of the body’s stress response, which triggers toxic stress. Toxic stress, when not properly addressed and reduced, can dramatically change how the brain develops and can lead to many learning and behavioral issues as a child, as well as many common life-threatening health conditions as an adult.
  • 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness? And 1 in 20 U.S adults experience serious mental illness? Anxiety disorders, eating disorders, depression, ADHD, addictions, and bipolar disorder are all examples of common, treatable mental health conditions.
  •  The average delay between mental health symptom onset and treatment is 11 years? It’s important to know that asking for help is okay. Collectively, we can work to eliminate stigmas around mental health and change the narrative from “What’s WRONG with you?” to “What happened to you.”

The MISSION of the Cobb Collaborative is "Engaging, Educating and Empowering the community to improve the well-being of children and families." We forward our Mission by focusing our work across three main initiatives - Mental Health, Literacy & Civic Engagement. We believe that these target areas serve the greatest needs in our community and create the greatest impact for good.
