Mental health affects ALL people, regardless of culture, race, ethnicity, age, gender, or sexual orientation. A person's mental health includes their emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Our mental health affects how we feel, think and behave. It also contributes to the way we handle stress, make decisions and relate to other people.
Protecting the mental health of the youngest members of our community is a priority. All children and adolescents need connections in order to maintain their mental health and overall well-being. At our Resilient Cobb Summit in February, Dr. Douglas Bell spoke on the importance of connections as being important in supporting healthy development and building resilience in children. Dr. Bell also focused on the "4 Components of a Connection", which are:
- Eye contact.
- Touch.
- Presence.
- Playful situations.
When behaviors seem to suggest "attention seeking," re-frame the narrative to realize that what is actually needed is CONNECTION. As a reminder, it is NEVER too late to work on building connections. Children and teens can gain resilience at any age with connections and support from trusted adults.
Research shows that our young people are struggling with mental health. At the Cobb Collaborative, we know that mental health affects all people and is important to everyone's wellness. We encourage everyone to learn more about promoting and protecting youth mental health by attending a training events, such as:
We will also be offering Youth Mental Health First Aid classes again this year, so stay tuned for those dates and times.

The Basics Cobb County is our Birth-5 programming that aims to provide fun, simple, and powerful strategies to help every child reach their full potential. The Basics Vision is a Cobb County where infants, toddlers, and preschoolers of all racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds are on track to achieve their full potential--having benefited from early experiences that foster healthy brain development, learning, joy, and resilience.
We're expanding and have a need to recruit a few passionate individuals to assist us in facilitating Basics workshops. Ideal individuals will be outgoing, passionate about early learning, and have a love and desire to support both children and their parents/caregivers. Training will be provided and stipends will be offered.
Please note that we also have a great need for Spanish speaking Basics Workshop Facilitators as well.
Interested in learning more about The Basics and/or becoming a Facilitator with us? Email Leslie Danford or Kaleigh Raulerson to learn how you can get involved.
