COCA-COLA LOGO
BORN IN TIFTON?
By FRANK SAYLES JR.
Tifton Grapevine
Was the current
Coca-Cola logo known around the world actually
created in
Tifton in
1932?
Yes indeed, according to a recent article in the Hutchinson (Minn.) Leader. The newspaper credits Hutchinson native and artist Les Kouba with "polishing up the Coca-Cola logo" while doing a job for the Tifton Coca-Cola bottling company.
According to the Leader, Kouba "created the familiar Coca-Cola logo. It was in

Tifton, Georgia, in 1932 that he made history," the newspaper wrote. It then quotes the late artist's book, "The Legacy of Les C.
Kouba" :
"Since I painted so many of those bulletins, I was very
familiar with the
Coca-Cola logo used at that time," he said in his book. "I thought it was kind of

heavy looking and it
could use more slant to the letters. I explained my ideas to
Mr. Holmes, the
owner of the
Tifton Bottling Plant. After listening carefully, he said to me in his slow,
Southern drawl, 'Well ... good.' I accepted his approval and moved full steam ahead with my
improvements. I
painted the
large bulletin in the
ballpark in
Tifton. I remember it was over
100 degrees when I tackled that project.
"Mr.
Holmes was so
pleased with the sign that he
called the ad department at
Coca-Cola headquarters in
Atlanta," Kouba recalled. "They came out to
Tifton with all sorts of
cameras and
technical-looking stuff to take pictures of

my sign. Shortly therafter, they showed up again and this time, they wanted me
to
sign a release form giving them the
rights to the
improved logo design. It seems they liked my improvements and wanted to incorporate them into the
official Coca-Cola logo.
"They gave me a
sizeable check for my efforts. It was quite a
big deal as I remember it."
The
Coca-Cola Co.'s official
website in its
"History of the Coca-Cola Logo" makes no mention of
Kouba, who died in
1998
and was a
renowned artist
in
Minnesota
. The Hutchinson newspaper said
Les Kouba is among that city's "most famous sons. There's Les Kouba Parkway and Kouba Point, both named after hi
m. The McLeod County Historical Museum is home to the
Les Kouba Art Gallery
, which houses the largest collection of his original artwork, limited-edition prints and memorabilia"
The Coca-Cola logo, although essentially unchanged from its beginnings, did undergo some subtle editing in the 1930s. As Kouba noted, the Spencerian script logo dating ba
ck to
1887
actually was
heavier
, and the
1930s-'40s logo
used today does have
slightly more
of a
slant
.
So, if this story is
true, then
Tifton was the
first place in the world to
unveil the
iconic Coca-Cola
logo in its current form. Chalk it up as another
Tifton first, right up there with the United States
interstate highway system beginning In
Tifton -- but that's
another story for another day.

HELPING STUDENTS THROUGH SCHOLARSHIPS
Food and entertainment have always been a part of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's "Evening for ABAC," but supporters know their contributions fund student scholarships.
"Receiving this scholarship meant the world to me," said Taylor Kight, a freshman nursing major from Moultrie. "It helped tremendously when it came time to pay for my books, and it will also help me in years to come."
Kight received the Colquitt Regional Medical Center Scholarship this year. Colquitt Regional was a $5,000 Platinum Sponsor of An Evening for ABAC in 2017.
Noah Pierzchajlo, a freshman biology major from Tifton, also received the Colquitt Regional scholarship.
"This scholarship is an incredible way to recognize my work as a student while freeing me up financially to become an even better student," Pierzchajlo said. "My entire family is grateful since I plan to be in school another eight to 10 years."
"We are proud to support student scholarships at ABAC," said Colquitt Regional President and CEO Jim Matney. "One of our greatest challenges as a healthcare organization is ensuring that we have a solid and capable workforce."
The ABAC Foundation raised more than $100,000 for student scholarships at An Evening for ABAC last year. It marked the most successful night for student scholarships since the event began in 1972.
