CovLA Printed Newsletter

(a handy reference)

The #CovLA newsletter is always available in the green newspaper boxes around town. Although there is overlap between the newsletter and the e-blasts, there is also some different content between the two.

Page 3, the calendar page, is a handy reference of what's happening around town. It is also a nice way to share what's happening in Covington with those residents who "don't do e-mail."

Pick up as many as you need from St. John's Coffeehouse, St. Tammany Parish Hospital Employee Pharmacy (formerly known as Braswell Drugs), Downtown Drugs, Tree of Hope, Moe's Art Supply, Black Flower Apparel, Acquistapace's Supermarket, City Hall or The Covington Trailhead.

Knights of Columbus

Coats for Kids

The Knights of Columbus are doing their annual coat collection. Please place gently used coats in the collection box located at Acquistapace's Covington Supermarket, Rouses or the Parish Courthouse.

It's a good thing.

If you have coats to donate, put them in your car today. Once inside the store, you will remember you were supposed to bring the coats. Then, you can go back out to your car in the parking lot and get the coats ; )

While there, you can also purchase canned veggies or a jar of peanut butter for The Food Bank barrel. Good Stuff.

Men Who Cook is the annual fundraiser for Children Advocacy Center / Hope House. It pairs local "celebrities" (community leaders) with local restaurants for a fun, competitive cook-off...all to fight child abuse locally. Great Fun, Great Food and a Great Cause.

Located atop the parking garage of the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center (quite a night time view), the event includes tastings of each team's gourmet dish; complimentary wine, beer and other refreshments, live music by Groovy 7 and possibly a dancing Mayor.

So much music combined with our centuries of history and fantastic restaurants combine to make Covington one of the coolest cities in the northern hemisphere:

The Floods of Covington

As I am fond of saying, "A Flood Zone is a zone of land that floods." For centuries, the area between the Tchefuncte River near Goodbee and the Bogue Falaya River near Lee Road have been flooded by sheet flows that actually connect the two rivers into one. Any structure built flat to the ground should expect water inside of it.

Significant rain events took place in 2016, 1996, 1983, 1961, 1947, 1928, 1916, 1898 and 1875. The flood of 1928 was comparable to the more recent one of 2016.

1916
1928
1947
1961

Each flood is different. The one of 1983 is particularly interesting. A strong south wind for 3 days pushed Lake Borgne into Lake Ponchartrain and Lake Ponchartrain up the Tchefuncte River … basically plugging the river.

Then, a heavy rain fell north of Covington. As the run off moved downstream and met the "plug," it swirled, turned around and flowed in reverse i.e. uphill.

Local journalist and historian Ron Barthet chronicles much of St. Tammany's history at Tammany Family Blog including a particularly interesting piece on the flood of 1916.
