Coastal P & O November 2018 News
GO BABY GO!

On October 27, 2018, we joined forces with volunteer engineering students from ODU for our Inaugural Go Baby Go event! It was held at our Norfolk office and we had a Halloween theme. We worked with the students from ODU to modify Power Wheel 6V cars to properly match each child's needs. This includes adapting the seat and button to encourage the child to use their weaker area to get the car to move in order to encourage strengthening of the weak area.

GO Baby GO was started by the University of Delaware. Instead of patenting the idea, they decided to share the information with the world so many more children would benefit. Coastal has adapted the idea to provide a Go Baby Go event for the South Hampton Roads area. We hope to have a semi-annual event.

Coastal Out in the Community

Last month, Emily and Kaddie visited Bayside High School in Virginia Beach to present information about the orthotics and prosthetics field to students in the Health Sciences Academy. They presented to five freshman classes!

Have you met Madison?

Madison joined team Coastal in 2017 as a Resident. After working with us for an 18 month residency, she is now a Certified Orthotist and Board Eligible Prosthetist. She has been a great addition to our team!
Will the AFO/SMO/UCBL/FO fit well in my shoes?
The device will fit best in a sneaker that ties. We are always surprised at what shoes work and what shoes do not. Before going up in size, try a wide. Websites like Zappos Adaptive highlight shoes that work best with various orthotic devices.

How long will my device last?
As long as it is achieving its primary goal and is comfortable! Children are likely to outgrow the device in 6mo-1yr. With our adult population, devices may last many years depending on the materials used. It is always a good idea to check in with your orthotist or prosthetist if it has been longer than 1 year.

Can I wear this device in the water or in the shower?
Most of our devices are made for the dry land. Check with your practitioner for specific instructions regarding your device.

Checking in with...Heidi!
We caught Heidi in between patients to ask a few questions! Here's what we learned.

What made you decide to enter the orthotics and prosthetics field?  I never really heard of this field until my Mom mentioned it to me. She is a physical therapist (Retired now) and I thought that I wanted to follow in her footsteps. She went to a continuing education course which was on the O&P field and the services they provide. She had brought home the materials from this course and shared it with me. The more I researched this field the more interested I became. I knew that I wanted to work with people and ideally specialize in pediatrics. I wanted to help people in need and build a relationship with them, not just treat them and never see them again. I liked that this field was hands on and was different patient to patient. I applied to the program at Northwestern, was accepted and have enjoyed it every step of the way.

Favorite sport? Gymnastics (yes it is a sport)

Dogs or Cats? Dogs

Three random facts about Heidi:
· I did competitive gymnastics through high school
·   I married my High school sweetheart
·   I have lived in 3 different states due to being a Military wife
Special Day for Special Kids at CHKD's 2018 Fall Fest
On October 20, 2018, we enjoyed being a part of CHKD's 2018 Fall Fest! The event provided an indoor accessible "neighborhood" for special needs children to trick-or-treat. We had a blast decorating our house and even won the prize for best costumes! Thank you, Dr. Dillard, for inviting us to participate!
