As we wrap up Week 2, I hope you are getting back into the swing of things and enjoying the energy and excitement of our students.
I am particularly excited about one group of students - this year's Dean's Student Advisory Board (DSAB). The DSAB
is a student-run organization that advocates for the needs of students in CoLA, making sure that all voices are being heard. I've met with them once already and know this enthusiastic group of student leaders will represent the student body well and will be a great resource for the college. You will learn more about our DSAB members in upcoming CoLA Weekly messages.
Congratulations to our CoLA colleagues who were selected to participate in this year's highly-competitive Wright Leader Academy
:
Sean Pollock, History/Center for Teaching and Learning; La Fleur Small, Sociology and Anthropology/Applied Behavioral Science; and Jonathan Winkler, History.
This program is a wonderful professional development tool that is designed to strengthen collaborations and partnerships across campus. I know Sean, La Fleur, and Jonathan will represent CoLA well.
Collaborations are important, and our LEAP (Learning English for Academic Purposes) program is actively working to strengthen and increase its partnerships with various programs and departments within the university. The benefits of a LEAP partnership extend to both domestic and LEAP students. To learn more about how you might establish a new partnership with LEAP, visit their website
.
I hope you can attend the Stein Galleries Open Reception on Saturday, September 23, 6:00-9:00 p.m. You will see a wonderful showcase of artwork from the Stein Collection and the Permanent Collection, featuring artists like Gauguin, Renior, Lewitt, Rothko, Warhol, and many others.
At the fall CoLA Retreat we discussed ways in which we can take ownership of student recruitment and retention. One initiative we shared was a newly created CoLA Emergency Fund. Established by external donations, the CoLA Emergency Fund can provide one-time support up to $500 for students with a sudden emergency that would prevent them from attending classes. Please keep this resource in mind as you work with your students, and encourage those who are eligible to fill out this form
and submit it to the Dean's Office.
I hope you saw Carol Loranger's recent article in the Dayton Daily News -
Education is more than earning potential
.
At a time when
the value of higher education and in particular, the liberal arts, is being called into question on a repeated basis, Carol's message is a strong argument for the important work we are doing in CoLA.
