What an interesting week. We celebrated the first day of spring and then were immediately hit with snow. You never know what to expect with Ohio's weather! Despite the chilly conditions, we are going to heat things up in the Creative Arts Center tomorrow night when we welcome over 700 people to our 19th annual ARTSGALA. Our fine and performing arts students are ready to shine and impress our guests and President Schrader, who will be experiencing this event for the first time. It will be a grand affair and will raise significant scholarship support for our students.
CoLA had a strong showing in the first week of the annual Campus Scholarship and Innovation Campaign and we are already at 27% participation. The goal this year is 50% so we are halfway there! Last year, CoLA had the highest participation among the colleges at 56%, showing that we mean what we say when we claim we are all about our students.
When you are considering a gift to CSIC this year, please remember that you decide where your money goes by designating a fund, and there are hundreds to choose from on the CSIC website
. If you don't see what you are looking for, you can contact Dawn Banker at x2226 for help. Also, please remember that no administrative fees are taken from your donation; 100% of the money you donate is placed in the fund you choose. And most importantly, by donating, you are helping our students. Many of our students would be unable to attend the university without this campaign. If you don't have a favorite fund you wish to support, the following funds are priorities of the college: the CoLA Internship Scholarship, the CoLA Emergency Fund, and the Liberal Arts Study Abroad Scholarship.
The 2018 Piediscalzi Lecture in Religion and American Culture, Religion Around Billie Holiday, will be held Thursday, March 29, 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Endeavor Room, 156A-B Student Union. Tracy Fessenden, The Steve and Margaret Forster Professor in Comparative Mythology from Arizona State University, will discuss the surprising ways in which famed jazz singer Billie Holiday and her music were shaped by religion. This event honors Nicholas Piediscalzi, the founder and long-time chair of Wright State's Department of Religion, and is co-sponsored by the University Honors Program, the African and African American Studies Program, and Classics.
You can learn more about this talk online.
The School of Music received some wonderful news recently. Piano students David Lao, Jocelyn Hui, and Christa Galey all won in the State Graves Competition in Columbus, competing against students from conservatories and universities across the state of Ohio. That same day, Jocelyn and Christa also went to Cincinnati to compete at the Three Arts Scholarship Fund Competition as two of the finalists in the Graduate Division, and Jocelyn won second place (all the other finalists were from the College-Conservatory of Music). It is great to see our students representing themselves and Wright State in these highly competitive arenas.
During spring break, Wright State students had the opportunity to participate in a Civil Rights Pilgrimage
commemorating the 50-year anniversary of the assassinations of two charismatic American leaders: the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy. The pilgrimage also celebrated renowned figures of the American civil rights movement, including Congressman John Lewis, as well as unsung heroes and "sheroes" such as Katherine Johnson and Sarah Collins Rudolph. Highlights included the National Civil Rights Museum (Lorraine Motel) in Memphis: a student workshop at the Highlander Research and Education Center in New Market, Tennessee; and visits to the Alex Haley Museum and Interpretive Center, the Museum of Appalachia, and Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Thank you to Tracy Snipe, Political Science,
who
taught the class and led this year's commemorative pilgrimage, and to Nycia Lattimore, who served as director and administrator of this important program.
