January 12, 2018
Welcome back to campus, and to Spring semester. I hope you were able to relax and unwind over the long holiday break. I spent some time in Boston with family: it was even colder than it was here!
Just a reminder that the general scholarship application for Wright State is now closed, but there are two additional scholarships open only to CoLA students: the Leadership Scholarship and Study Abroad Scholarship. Applications are due to the CoLA Dean's office (163 Millett Hall) by Friday, January 26, 2018. Please remind your students to take advantage of these great opportunities for support. We are also able to provide support from the CoLA Emergency Fund on a case-by-case basis.
CoLA kicked off its pilot Professional Mentoring Program this week with 13 mentor/mentee pairs. This program links junior and senior liberal arts students with mentors who will assist them in making the transition from their college experience into the professional world. While we began with a small group this semester, this program will be available to the broader CoLA student body during the next academic year. Watch for more information on that application process timeline later in the semester.
As you know, I've been giving away small prizes to students displaying CoLA window clings on their cars. It's been a great way to build CoLA pride and connect students to the college. However, it's January and I don't relish spending time walking through snowy parking lots looking for the CoLA logo. So during the cold weather I thought I'd change things up a bit. If any of you have small classes for CoLA majors you'd like me to visit, please let me know. I'll bring some treats, hand out window clings, and talk about the college for a minute or two. We'll have to work around my crazy schedule, but I'll do what I can. It's important that our students know we care about them and want to contribute to their success.
The Dean's Student Advisory Board (DSAB) is still looking for a few more student hosts for Raider for a Day. DSAB plans to match high school seniors who have been accepted into CoLA with a student host. Student hosts will reach out to their matched high school student to coordinate a meeting day during the week of February 12. The hosts would take the student with them to class and show them around campus. The goal of Raider for a Day is to give high school seniors a chance to gain a more personal campus experience and learn what their college career would be like. DSAB especially needs students from musical theatre, music education, and history, but all interested CoLA students are welcome to get involved. Faculty can forward the names and emails of students interested in being hosts to DSAB President Emma Mattingly.
