June 2024

Alumni Giving Back!

The essence of our co-op community lies in the lasting bonds we build with one another, creating a foundation of connection and resilience. Our alumni entrepreneurs are exemplifying this spirit by generously supporting our Parent Advisory Council initiatives of Equity, Community Outreach, and Scholarships with some fundraisers this month. Don't miss the chance to contribute to our co-op family by purchasing sensory kits and booking photo sessions this June. Let's continue to nurture and uplift our community together!

Kaitlin Murdock's company, Sensa Play, offers beautiful sensory bin kit rentals that can help to fill those open-ended summer hours with no co-op! With many themes to choose from, your little ones will be thrilled to play and explore for hours, while you will be thrilled to have rich activities someone else created.

Ali Vrbas with Sound Roots Photography is also offering some June love to co-op!

"Is your family looking for a way to beautifully document your everyday lives? What about the special connections you have with each other? Is someone always missing from your photos because they are behind the camera/phone? Maybe you are tired of just having family selfies. I would like to offer you a beautiful alternate option. Real Life sessions with Sound Roots Photography are perfect for the co-op family. These are documentary-style sessions preserving memories of you and your favorite people doing your favorite things at home and in your neighborhood in this special phase of life. Sessions are 1-1.5 hours and prices start at $469. Co-op families and alumni that book this month receive $50 off and 5% of income will go directly to supporting co-op!"

Registration Update

Update from Fiona Preedy, Registrar:

"Enrollment for the 24-25 school year is looking robust! While many of our classes are full or nearly full, we do have scattered openings available. We have a handful of spots at each age band - Twos, Threes, PreK, and Multi-age. Our youngest classes, our Toddlers and Infants/Movers, are filling up fast. Many families are not aware our program starts so young—spread the word!"

And - a gentle reminder that the request for May 2025 tuition deposit has gone out to all families. Be sure to make your payment or check in with Fiona!"

Updates from Preschools

Field Trips Galore!

As spring kicked into full gear the last several weeks, our older Admiral students have been loving the chance to get out into the world and explore!  The Threes class took an exciting trip to the stables for the mounted police to learn about how the horses live and work.  The 3/4s class took advantage of low tides and explored all the fascinating wildlife in the pools left behind.  And the PreK class went to check out a salmon fry release.

From the children’s reflections & thank you notes:

"I liked touching the sea anemones, they were sticky!"

“Thank you for scooping up the salmon for us to hold and dump into the water”

“Thank you for giving me directions. The fish were hard to see.”

"I really liked when we saw the pony. I liked his braids. He had so many!"

Welcome Back!

At Alki Cooperative Preschool, building community is at the core of everything we do. We believe in the importance of creating an inclusive environment for our children, which is why we welcome parents, nannies, grandparents, and other important adults in our student’s lives into our classrooms.

This year, we have had retired Co-Op teacher and parenting educator, Judy Hall, volunteer in our 2s classroom with her little friend, Levi. Judy's expertise and dedication greatly impacted our program for many years and we are grateful to have her wisdom and humor in our classroom again as a volunteer. You can see how engaging she is with these young students!!!

Thank you to all our grown-ups for being an essential part of our cooperative family. This diverse participation enriches the educational experience for all our children and families.

Congratulations, Tami!

Join us in congratulating Teacher Tami Aidlin on earning her Early Childhood Education Bachelor of Applied Science Degree from North Seattle College! Tami worked on her degree

over the last two years all while teaching the 2s and Pre-K classes at LPCP, applying her learning directly into the classroom and reflecting on the results with other educators.

This degree provides professional development training for preschool education professionals, allowing them to keep pace with increasing professionalization in the field. The curriculum aligns with accreditation standards established by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and prepares educators who are skilled in addressing and undoing barriers of inequity and misinformation.

Teacher Tami’s new qualification brings her knowledge and expertise to our community; we are incredibly proud of her accomplishment and grateful for the positive impact she continues to make in our school.

Sweet Twos Reflections

"As the year comes to a close, I am already missing our 2s class with teacher Kiki. Every week has brought fun activities with themes incorporating all of the favorites- dinosaurs, space, construction, animals, and more! We’ve watched as children’s confidence, language, and socialization have developed with loving support from all adults and modeled by the teachers. I catch my son, who began the year barely two years old and with limited speech, now busting out words and moves to favorite circle time songs while at home including the recently learned “Wheels on the Bus.” I hear students talking about their friends and watch as they bounce around joyfully interacting with other adults, a testament to the bonds built throughout the year. While I still can’t imagine our weeks without the love we receive from teacher Kiki, we’re excited to keep up with our co-op friends during summer playdates and next year in the 3s class."

Parent Support

One of the most impactful things co-op does is provide parent support, education, and coaching for our families. While our program is on hiatus through the summer. we will be back to offering a full slate of parent education seminars next fall. Keep an eye on this page to explore the new slate when it's ready!
