State of Yachting 2024

SuperYacht Times has released the latest edition of its annual The State of Yachting report, now available for download. This SYT iQ Insight article provides a glimpse into the comprehensive market data analysis and insights provided by the Intelligence Team at SuperYacht Times.

In 2023, the yacht industry witnessed a modest decline in the sales of both new and used yachts, yet figures remained higher than pre-pandemic levels. This observation raises an intriguing question: Have yacht sales reached a new, elevated baseline in the post-COVID era? Notably, throughout the year, stock markets in the United States and also in SYT's home base the Netherlands, experienced substantial growth. This economic uptrend may have played a role in encouraging prospective superyacht buyers.

The 25 Largest Yachts in the World

The new arrivals in 2024 knock the mighty 436.4-foot Al Mirqab and Koru, Jeff Bezos’s sailing yacht, off the list. The “smallest” yacht—Serene—measures a whopping 439.3 feet. A raft of behemoths didn’t make it, including Feadship’s 290-foot Project 821 that is launching this year, the largest build from the Dutch shipyard to date.

Two of Lürssen’s 2024 deliveries also fell short, including Project Deep Blue and Project JassJ. That said, the German yard remains top of the leader board with the immoveable 592.6-foot Azzam. It also claims 13 of the 25 world’s largest yachts, two of which are new entries.

How the Superyacht Sector is Affected by Maritime Attacks in the Red Sea

A spate of maritime attacks on commercial ships in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden by the Houthis has caused a significant decline in the number of merchant vessels passing through the area. But how will it affect superyacht traffic, and what are the long-term effects for the industry as a whole? BOATPro investigates…

What is happening in the southern Red Sea?

On 19 November 2023, the 189.2-metre Galaxy Leader cargo vessel was boarded by Houthi militants using a helicopter as it passed through the southern Red Sea. Originally en route to India, the hijacked vessel was then redirected to the Hodeidah port in Yemen, where it is still being held along with its 25 crew members.

Inaugural World Boating Day Set to Launch

The Superyacht Life Foundation is launching the first-ever World Boating Day from 25-26 May, 2024, a new initiative aimed at lifting the veil of the industry’s everyday behind-the-scenes operations to a new audience. Local, regional and national industry bodies are invited to bolster the movement, with the non-profit campaign comprising a myriad of local open days across the globe, aiming to cultivate a greater understanding of the leisure boating industry worldwide.

“As a collective campaign, World Boating Day strives to support organisations in engaging their networks for one dedicated weekend per year, inviting their member companies to host memorable events of celebration on the water,” says Dilan Sarac, Executive Director of The Superyacht Life Foundation. “We could not be more grateful for the support we have garnered so far, and truly open our doors to anyone who wishes to join.”

“For European Boating Industry, it is essential to highlight the vital connection between boating and the environment,” adds Philip Easthill, Secretary-General of European Boating Industry. “By bringing our industry closer to users, we can grow boating, inspire more people to protect our waters, and foster a passion for the seas across Europe and beyond.”
