REMINDER: BULK PICK UP

The City asks that residents please place any bulk pick-up items on their treelawn early Monday morning or Sunday night of their scheduled bulk pick-up week--even if trash and recycling pick up is later in the week.

The bulk pick-up truck starts its run on Monday morning. Bulk items placed curbside later than Monday run the risk of being missed that month.

Also, bulk items that are fabric-covered, such as couches and chairs, must be wrapped in plastic to avoid contamination and spreading germs.

Cleveland Heights mayor takes complex case to national development conference

From Cleveland.com (paywall)

When asked to bring a complex project to a conference in New York City last month, Mayor Kahlil Seren came to the table with much to unpack.

In his case, it was the puzzling “Noble-Warrensville-Mayfield Triangle,” a conundrum of mismatched land uses at “the eastern gateway” to the city.

“It has long been the site of several municipal functions -- where the least welcome happens to be a staging area for lawn and leaf debris,” Seren noted during his mayor’s comments at the May 20 City Council meeting.

But wait, there’s more, including a salt dome on the property, also regarded as an eyesore, as well as the former Hillside Dairy, described by Seren as “an old building that desperately needs to be demolished.”

There may be some Brownfield funding for that, with environmental remediation likely required for the old dairy, which last served as a police annex building.

“They asked me to bring a complicated project, so I could best make use of the expertise in the room,” Seren said.

“And I brought that one because it is complicated...”

CH-UH students tackle yard care for seniors one week each summer

The WAVE Program, now in its fourth year, is a community service project led by Steve Walker who manages 35 students from Cleveland Heights-University Heights High School in providing yard care, mainly for senior citizens during the summer.

In one week, the students and Mr. Walker blitz through the weeds, sharpen up hedgerows, plant petunias, and generally spruce up the yards of 10 homes in Cleveland and University Heights. Walker drives his volunteer crew, all earning service hour credits toward graduation, in a City of Cleveland Heights van from place to place.

Cleveland Heights supports the WAVE program through its Community Development Block Grants, which cover the cost of labor and materials, such as flowerpots, for one week’s worth of houses. Grateful homeowners, like Ms. Charlene Thomas, whose house is seen here, kick in with pizza and drinks for the hardworking youth.

Coffee shop owner and consultant to address possibility of a cafe at Nobility Court

Part of the re-envisioned Nobility Court affordable housing development is to bring new residents into the neighborhood who will access the retail and amenities of Noble Road. That will include a new ground-floor space at Nobility Court that residents voiced a desire to see filled with a community-serving operation such as a coffee shop.

Molly Allen has a background of more than 20 years in restaurant design. She is certified by the Specialty Coffee Association in coffee management, sensory skills, barista skills, and roasting. She is also the designer and manager of the Ready Set Café in Gordon Square.

Allen will speak at the invitation of Nobility Court co-developer Start Right Development about the possibility of a coffee shop serving the Noble area at Nobility Court with an appearance on June 24 at 7:00 pm at Start Right Church, 977 Caledonia Avenue.

You may have noticed the road crews applying a fresh coat of paint to roadways in Cleveland Heights. All of the city's major thoroughfares are in the process of receiving freshly painted lines. Also, city crews are painting the Pride-themed crosswalk at the Taylor Road entrance to Cain Park (followed by the crosswalk at Lee Road). Please be cautious when driving near construction zones and always look out for the safety of our city crews. Thanks!

Ohio House passes CROWN Act, first step in making hair discrimination illegal

From News 5 Cleveland

After years of trying to make hair discrimination illegal, the Ohio House passed legislation to prohibit public schools from penalizing students for wearing natural hairstyles.

For Ladosha Wright, hair is identity.

"My whole career has been about the humanity of hair," Wright said.

The Cleveland Heights cosmetologist believes that textured hair gets discriminated against — feeling it herself and seeing other people of color face inequality just because of their hair type and style.

We've been talking to Wright for years, and she continues to advocate at the Statehouse, like she did in February, to stop this form of racial bias.

Building Heights program teaches filmmaking and more to CH-Uh students

From WKYC News

Building HeightsMiddle School Shorts program engages Cleveland Heights-University Heights students in grades six through eight to write and produce original short films. Now in its fourth year, founder Jen Holland says this program began as a natural fit.

"This is not just about learning about film or writing, it's more or less about public speaking, being able to get out of your shell," Holland explained.

"We realized that the kids love being in front of the camera, and so they create these stories and we would film them and produce them, but we would teach them how to do it. We really want them to own their own story."

This ownership of the story is felt by each young person who participates. Most importantly, it speaks to their passions.

"It was the only program that actually offered what I wanted to do with my future. I want to be an actor," said Roxboro Middle School seventh-grader Ken'Naysia Green.

"I love writing and making scripts," Monticello Middle School sixth-grader Charlotte Walker added. "A lot of writing the story has been thinking about how it could have worked on the camera."

Comprised of a team of PTA members with guest artists from the local and national film community, this robust program seeks to give participants quality film and life skills for the future.

Robinson curates Artful's Juneteenth exhibit

From The Heights Observer

LaSaundra Robinson, an accomplished painter, curates the third annual Juneteenth exhibit at ARTFUL. The opening reception will be held June 15, 6–9 p.m., at Coventry PEACE Campus in Cleveland Heights.

Robinson, who has had a studio at ARTFUL since 2017, recently answered some questions about her work and the Juneteenth exhibit:

What artist(s) most influence you?

I wouldn't say that there are specific artists that influence my work directly, but there are definitely artists that inspire me. Henry Taylor, Kerry James Marshall, and Charly Palmer, along with countless YouTube and Instagram artists, keep me wanting to paint and try new things.

Can you describe how your style has evolved over the years?

When I first started painting, I would just find a couple interesting images, put them together and try to make a story. I used a lot of mixed media then. I decided to focus on what I really wanted to paint and that was Black women. After painting in a more realistic style using oils, I began to experiment using a looser style using acrylic paint. The oil painting takes a long time so in between those I like to do loose acrylic paintings.

What is your biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge I face is being a single mom and a caregiver with not a lot of support. Having lupus steals my energy, but whenever I can I'm out here trying my best to move forward with my art and this amazing art community we have in Cleveland.

HeightsArts exhibit featuring emerging artists on June 14

Join Heights Arts for the opening reception of Emergent 2024 and Spotlight: Destiny Moore.

Emergent, since its debut in 2015, has showcased some of northeast Ohio's best up-and-coming artists. Emerging artists include painter Jules Ahern who uses found objects to reckon with home memories, oil painter Erjon Hajnaj who invokes dramatic tones with Renaissance painting styles, mixed-media artist Kasey Kania whose work is centered on the natural world, Sylvia Munodawafa, who draws inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of Zimbabwe to explore identity and spirituality through her paintings and sculptures, self-taught oil painter Grace Nestor-Louie who creates playful scenes of nature in vivid colors, visual artist DeAnne Smith who explores micro-patterns with acrylic paintings, and painter Mar’Cess Stubbs who explores family histories and identity through traditional techniques and the human figure.

In her spotlight, Destiny Moore presents a collection of black-and-white street photography that captures the beauty in ordinary people and city life. Moore’s work, whether the subject is a protest or a snowy bridge, finds beauty in both quiet and loud moments, reminding us to do the same.
