Community-Wide Cleanup THIS Saturday

Help make a difference by joining the #CleanStreetsMatter Community-wide Cleanup on Saturday, March 4. This will be the fifth Community-wide Cleanup hosted by Macon-Bibb County and Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful (KMBB) since the start of the Clean Streets Matter initiative in 2021. This cleanup expands on the original efforts so illegal road signs can be removed, main thoroughfares can be cleaned, and specific areas will be cleaned.

“The more people see us come together to clean our streets, the more they will organize their own cleanups throughout the year, and the more we can do in other areas,” says Mayor Lester Miller. “Clean streets matter because Macon matters.”

Mayor Miller, since taking office, has had crews from different departments removed signs illegally placed along Macon-Bibb’s roads and from its intersections. He is inviting people who would like to help beautify the roads to meet him with their trucks Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Macon Mall (by the former JC Penney on the Mercer University Drive side) to collect signs from the right of way. All signs will be taken to the Public Works Department at 4520 Knight Road.

For neighborhood cleanups, people are encouraged to sign up with KMBB. You can sign up for your neighborhood cleanup by emailing information@KMBBC.org. People are still encouraged to clean up their neighborhoods even if they do not cleanup.

“Since we launched Clean Streets Matter and came together for four of these big days, our community has really stepped up to the plate and held their own regular cleanups throughout the year, and I am so proud of that,” says Mayor Miller.

Next Level hosts forum for parents

Next Level Community Development Center held a Community-Wide Parent Session on Tuesday, February 28, for an opportunity to learn about mental health and youth violence. About 200 people gathered at Bibb Mt. Zion Baptist Church and heard from multiple professionals and leaders in our community. This is one of several outreach efforts by Next Level funded by the Macon Violence Prevention (MVP) program through the Community Foundation of Central Georgia.

Some of those included Dr. Chanelle Sweet-Dixon – Co-Founder and CEO of Transitions Counseling, Consulting, and Coaching LLC in Macon – and Reverend Sheknita Smith.

“When we know better, we do better,” Dr. Dixon told the crowd. Dr. Dixon went on to explain Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE).

Parents and loved ones were given the opportunity to ask questions and learn about how to deal with their children who may face mental health problems or difficult surroundings.

Next Level is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering at-risk youth and families to exercise sound judgment regarding their education, health, social and emotional well-being through youth services (afterschool and summer programming) and mental health programs. Next Level is also one of the 25 organizations who received funding through Macon Violence Prevention (MVP) grants.

Preparing Cliffview Lake Park for fishing

We are one step closer to opening Cliffview Lake Park for families and neighbors to enjoy! While the beautification project is in the works, an aquatic expert has already gone out to see what kind of fish people can find in the lake.

“We also get to see all of the different size ranges of the fish,” said Michael Clark with Aquatic Escapes. “Anywhere from the reproduction that has taken place in the last few months, up to fish that may be 4 to 5 years old.

They were also looking for a predator to prey ratio.

“We didn’t really know what we were getting into, but that’s why we’re here,” said Clark. “So we can find out what we actually have to work with going forward and the best management practices to improve it for anybody that’s going to be using the park.”

In January, our Public Works Department removed a house and surrounding structures around the Lake as the first step in the overall project. The idea is to make the area a park where people can walk, run, bike, fish, and make memories with their loved ones.

“Improving recreation was one of the areas thousands of people asked me to focus on, and I know this neighborhood has long been promised this beautiful – but hard to access – area get much-needed improvements,” said Mayor Lester Miller.

In 2022, Commissioners approved purchasing the property and then funding the Cliffview Lake Park project. Hear more about the area in What’s Happening: District 2 here.

United Way launches Laundromat Library Program

United Way of Central Georgia (UWCG) launched its first Laundromat Library on Tuesday, February 28, at the Eisenhower Laundromat (100 S Heron Street). This was done in partnership with Zeta Amicae of Macon, an auxiliary group of the Epsilon Tau Zeta Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Laundromat Library, a United Way of Central Georgia Community Schools United outreach program, launched to increase access to books for children outside the home in unconventional settings such as laundromats, barbershops, and hair salons.

"A child's reading skills are critically important to their success in school as they will allow them to access the breadth of the curriculum and improve their communication and language skills. In addition, reading can be a fun and imaginative time for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them. But none of that is possible if they do not have access to age-appropriate books," said UWCG President & CEO George McCanless.

UWCG partnered with volunteers of Zeta Amicae of Macon to manage the book nooks at select business locations in Macon-Bibb County. Book nooks are unobscured spaces with milk crates filled with elementary level books. On site, young readers are encouraged to read a book or bring one home to share with others.

The Community Foundation of Central Georgia's On the Table initiative funded the Laundromat Library with a Conversation to Action grant.

"Two determinants of a child’s success when they start school are being read to regularly and the number of words heard by the child. Laundromat Library is an easy way to help the children in our community be successful,” said Kathryn Dennis, President of the Community Foundation of Central Georgia.

“Surrounding our families with books wherever they go is a great way to increase children’s opportunities to read,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “Laundromats certainly present people with quiet down time during which they have the chance to relax and enjoy a good book.”

Firefighters honored at Shield Club

Three of our firefighters were named the Shield Club’s Firefighters of the Year at the 53rd Annual Shield Club at the Idle Hour Golf and Country Club.

Captain Andrew Tye, Lieutenant Jason Moss, and Private Peyton Kell were all presented with the honor. The Fire Department’s Executive Command Staff selects firefighters who have displayed exemplary measures or heroic acts in the fire service and the names are forwarded to the Shield Club.

“I am extremely proud of our Honorees as they continue to prove their courage and dedication to protect the citizens in our community,” said Chief Shane Edwards. “Our team of firefighters continue to go above and beyond in times of crisis, and I want to say, ‘thank you’ to all our members.”

The idea for The Shield Club came from Mr. Peyton Anderson in the late 1960’s, when he learned of an organization called the 100 Club in Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Anderson was concerned with the accidents that had happened to law enforcement officers and the impact of these accidents on their families. So, he called on a few prominent friends in the Central Georgia community to establish The Shield Club in 1968.

The original intent of the organization was to give financial assistance to firemen, policemen, and peace officers in cases of extreme hardship or to their families in the event of their death. In the beginning, The Shield Club was able to give $1,000 to an officer’s widow or family to help cover immediate costs following the officer’s passing.

Today, The Shield Club still maintains a strong charitable purpose to benefit officers of the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department and the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. The organization contributes $5,000 to an officer who is severely injured in the line of duty or $10,000 to the officer’s family if they are killed in the line of duty.

Additionally, The Shield Club offers $30,000 in college scholarships each year to these officers and their immediate family members (including spouses and children) who are pursuing an undergraduate degree at an accredited four-year public or private institution in the state of Georgia.

Deadline to host table for On The

Table approaching

Community Foundation of Central Georgia (CFCG) recently announced the return of On The Table. The community-wide week of conversations will be held in-person from March 27-31, 2023, across 21 counties in Central Georgia. The deadline to register to host a table is Monday, March 6. Click here to register.

On The Table is an event that brings people of diverse backgrounds together to have meaningful conversations about important topics across central Georgia. These conversations are designed to generate new ideas, inspire bold solutions, cultivate relationships and collaborations, and inspire action to improve communities.

Inspired by The Chicago Community Trust, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation took On The Table nationwide in 2017 with 10 community foundations initially serving as partners to implement the community initiative in their regions. The Community Foundation of Central Georgia partnered with Knight Foundation to implement On The Table in Macon and Milledgeville in 2018, 2019 and virtually in 2020. On The Table will resume this year with technology powered by Knight Foundation and the program and Conversation to Action Grants funded by CFCG.

“On The Table is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to bring people together to connect and explore what each of us can do to make our community better,” said Kathryn Dennis, president of the Community Foundation of Central Georgia. “On The Table is successful because of the great support we receive each year from individuals and organizations who step up to host these important conversations.”

Individuals and organizations across the region are invited to host one or more tables of 8-12 guests, bringing people together over mealtime conversations to gather, share a meal, discuss issues and opportunities, and make connections to support future collaborative action. The topic of each On The Table conversation is selected by the host.

CFCG is also seeking Super Hosts who will commit to hosting at least 10 tables of 8-12 guests. Many organizations have already agreed to be a Super Hosts including Atrium Health Navicent, Bibb County School District, Centenary Community Ministries, the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce, Historic Macon Foundation, Macon- Bibb County Government, Macon Mental Health Matters, Middle Georgia Regional Library, Middle Georgia State University, Milledgeville-Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce, NewTown Macon, OneMacon, River Edge, United Way of Central Georgia, Wesleyan College, and the Downtown and Macon Rotary Clubs.
