Faculty News:


Our teaching artists have been busy this summer! Below are a few highlights.


  • Elizabeth Lau completed DanceAbility training through Spark Dance Program.
  • Our fabulous hip-hop teaching team trained with master teacher trainer, John Comix Barella.
  • Tap teachers, Laurie Chiasson and Alycia Miner, trained with master teachers at the Boston Tap Party.
  • Allie James had a successful season serving as Director of Training Programs for the Bates Dance Festival, where she also taught and performed.
  • In July, Scott McPheeters and Lizzy Mulkie performed at the Ogunquit Museum of Art. Scott also co-directs https://www.subcircle.org/ and brought several Subcircle guest teaching artists to CBM this summer!
  • Vanessa Beland served as Assistant Director and Movement Coordinator for OperaMaine's "La Cenerentola" (Cinderella) production at Merrill Auditorium.
  • Kate Marchessault guest taught for the Bates Dance Festival Young Dancers Intensive and has been working toward her Pilates equipment certification through Scarborough Pilates/The Kane School.
  • Kristin Sutton is choreographing "Spamalot" for Portland Players. The show opens on September 15. Grab your tickets here!
  • Rose Hutchins is beginning work on her new ballet, "The Little Mermaid," with composer, Evan Hart Marsh, which will premiere in August 2024. Stay tuned to this page for audition opportunities!
  • Isabel Ball began new work titled "Noisefloor" with Little House Dance Company and Palaver Strings, which will be co-presented by Portland Ovations and the State Theater in December.
  • Savana Swan completed an early childhood dance education through Discover Dance, which draws heavily upon Ann Green Gilbert's work in Brain Compatible Dance Education.

Holly Taylor


Holly Taylor (she/they) is a dance educator, writer, and choreographer from Providence, RI. Her movement background includes modern, ballet, gaga, postmodern and site-specific composition, and various contemporary forms. She has trained with artists from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Trisha Brown Dance Company, and Urban Bush Women, among others, and has performed in original works by Matthew Rushing and Saar Harari. Her writing has been published in PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art (MIT Press) and Yale Dance Theater Journal, and exhibited at AS220’s Resident Gallery. Holly received her B.A. in American Studies from Yale University and M.A. in Performance Studies from NYU Tisch. She is currently based out of Portland, Maine. Photo by Duc Nguyen


Isabel Ball


Isabel Ball (she/her), is a contemporary dance artist currently based out of Portland, Maine. She grew up in the Chicagoland area, where she studied dance at the Chicago Academy for the Arts. After graduating with an honorary dance award, she completed her BFA in Contemporary Dance Performance with a minor in Psychology from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. In 2020, she joined little house dance company under the direction of Heather Stewart. Since moving to Portland, she has developed her teaching practice, offering a creative movement-based class to studios throughout the city. Isabel continues to develop her interests in improvisation, performance, and teaching.

Savana Swan

(she/her) Savana Swan grew up dancing at Casco Bay Movers and Portland Ballet and was part of Portland Youth Dance’s Company for 5 years until she recently graduated from Portland High School. She’s been teaching classes around the Portland area through Portland Youth Dance's Community Programs for the past 5 years, and assisting classes at Casco Bay movers for the past 4. Savana loves sharing her passion for dance with kids and is beyond excited to further her teaching journey at Casco Bay Movers this year. She will also be attending Southern Maine Community College this year, where she will major in elementary education.

Portland Youth Dance Auditions will be held on Saturday, September 9, from

1:00 - 2:30 pm at Casco Bay Movers


Portland Youth Dance Company is a pre-professional, non-competitive youth dance company comprised of serious young dancers from the Greater Portland community.





The Portland Youth Dance Company is composed of:

– Hip Hop Crew: Intermediate and advanced hip hop dancers aged 12-18

– Company: Intermediate and advanced dancers aged 12-18

– PYD 2: Beginner and Intermediate dancers aged 10-18

Members of PYD are given superior technical instruction, outstanding and diverse choreography, numerous performance and travel opportunities, and direct involvement with our community programs.


Pre-registration by September 7th is required via the link below. Dancers should come prepared in dance or athletic wear with socks, ballet shoes, and sneakers designated for indoor use. Doors will open at 12:30 for sign-in and self-warm-up. Questions? Email info@portlandyouthdance.com
