ClassE meets daily from 8 - 9:20 am, Lifespan Center (unless noted above), 11021 E. Cty. Rd. 800 N., Charleston (Loxa Road - northeast of SBLHS). Class is open and everyone is welcome.
Learning About Retail and Organization with Steve Hardin

Steve Hardin, of Jack and Bill's Fine Clothing, discussed the changes in the retail industry over the years in Mattoon. He started working with the original owners when he was in school and worked his way into buying the business. 

He shared wonderful books on selling and the importance of using a calendar to track all appointments and tasks that need to be done each day. He also mentioned to write notes about your client's sizes and personal information, so they will feel appreciated by your business.


Pricing for Promotional Products


David Earp and his assistant Tom at the Lake Land College Print Shop showed us many examples of promotional pieces that could help promote our businesses. Students asked about pricing, design, deadlines and trends in collateral material and signage.

They told the class to identify who their target market was, because different groups respond more favorably to certain types of flyers, postcards and signage.

Learning about Business Canvas

Students learned how to quickly describe their business model and experiment with their ideas with the business canvas model.

With this tool, they can quickly change their plan when their research doesn't back their first assumptions.  

How to Plan a Golf Outing


Kim Uphoff, of Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, has been coordinating their Annual Golf Outing for ten years. She was gracious enough to tell the students all of the work and planning that goes into a successful event.

She also brought samples of their promotional pieces to help the students get an idea of what 
has worked in the past. The students with Kim brainstormed on ways to make the day fun for the golfers.
