Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month
Each year, we observe National Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.
Additionally, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities has announced National Hispanic-Serving Institutions week will be observed Sept. 12-18, 2022. The observance takes place during National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated Sept. 15-Oct. 15. According to the most recent analysis of enrollment data, 18% of all institutions of higher education (559 HSIs) enrolled 66% of all Latino undergraduates. HSIs represent less than 20% of institutions but enroll two-thirds of all Latino undergraduates.
Sacramento City College is proud to celebrate our role in improving access to education and advancing equity as a Hispanic-Serving Institution.

Racial Justice Book Circle
You are invited to join Folsom Lake College’s Fall 2022 Racial Justice Book Circle as we read and discuss Shawn A. Ginwright’s book The Four Pivots: Reimagining Justice, Reimaging Ourselves. Supplemented with reflections, prompts, cutting-edge research, and the author’s own insights and lived experience as an African American social scientist, professor, and movement builder, The Four Pivots helps us uncover our obstruction points. It shows us how to discover new lenses and boldly assert our need for connection, transformation, trust, wholeness, and healing. It gives us permission to create a better future - to acknowledge that a broken system has been predefining our dreams and limiting what we allow ourselves to imagine, but that it doesn’t have to be that way at all. Are you ready to pivot?
To accompany the book read, join your colleagues on Wednesdays from 11:45 am to 1:00 pm via Zoom, starting Wednesday, September 28, to review and discuss the concepts addressed. All Los Rios employees are welcome to participate! RSVP now. We also encourage you to support BIPOC-owned businesses and authors by shopping at these local Black-owned bookstores - Underground Books or Carol’s Books. Several e-copies of the book are also available via the Los Rios Libraries. We hope you will join us as we continue our college and district's commitment to cultivating a culture of anti-racism on our campuses!

SCC Receives $1 Million Gift for Art Education
Sacramento City College has received a $1 million gift from Christopher and Dana Daubert to support management of the Gregory Kondos Gallery, as well as greater access to the college’s multimillion-dollar, permanent art collection for the enjoyment and education of students and the community.
This is the largest gift to any Los Rios college by a living donor and will be used to establish the Christopher D. and Dana Daubert Endowment for Art Education. Creation of the endowment will provide funding for a Gallery Lead position which will create more consistent stewardship of the gallery and permanent art collection.
The Gallery Lead will curate art shows throughout the year, coordinate more opportunities for use of the permanent collection in the classroom, and increase access to the permanent collection for art students learning about the creation, curation and showing of art.

New LRPD Uniforms
The Los Rios Police Department (LRPD) has changed its uniforms, with the goal of making officers more approachable while still clearly identifiable to our community. LRPD has been engaged in a series of substantive reforms in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and our organizational commitment to equity and social justice, aligned with the work of Campaign Zero. This change is part of that work, with the goal of demilitarizing the look of officers’ uniforms as well as ensuring that our officers are not confused with those from other agencies.
