Foundation Scholarships Impact Student Lives

Every year, the Los Rios Colleges Foundation scholarship program makes a deep financial impact on the lives of our students. This year, $322,000 was awarded to 424 Sacramento City College students. As one SCC scholarship recipient noted:

"Two years ago, I could never have imagined I would be able to attend college, but with the support of Disability Services and Programs for Students (DSPS) and the incredible faculty at Sacramento City College, I have been able to achieve an education that has already impacted the lives of myself and my child. I believe that my calling in life is to improve the process of identifying and supporting students with disabilities in the public school system. I know that this is particularly important for children in foster care who may not have the resources outside of public school to support their growth and wellbeing. This scholarship will help me acquire the necessary materials to continue my education in the fall. Thank you again, so very much, for this generous gift." —Kali Williams

The California DMV has created an online REAL ID application page especially for educators, where you can start your application and upload your documents before completing the process at a DMV office. If you have a break this summer, this is a great opportunity to get your REAL ID.

Reminder - if you want to continue using your California driver’s license or identification card to board flights within the United States or enter secure federal facilities, you will need a REAL ID starting May 2023.

Passing of a Colleague

Sue Payne Kahler

June 29, 1931 - May 26, 2022

Sacramento, California - Sue Payne Kahler, age 90, died on May 26, 2022, after a brief illness. She is remembered by her family as a joyful presence and by colleagues, students, and friends as a force for good at Sacramento City College and in the wider community.

Born on June 29, 1931, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Sue Ryals was raised in Dallas, Texas, attended Hollins College, and married Robert Payne in 1952. Over the next 15 years Sue was an Air Force officer's wife, a mother, and a Red Cross volunteer who, when her family was stationed in Japan, aided severely wounded servicemen evacuated from Vietnam.

By 1967 Sue was living in Sacramento, a single mother of three, and enrolled at Sacramento State University. "It marked the beginning of a new life for me," she recalled. Sue earned a master's degree in counseling from CSUS and joined the Sacramento City College faculty as a counselor in 1970. It was her life's work. She called it "the best job in the world" and for the next 28 years she championed students of every background, age, ethnicity, immigration status, and academic interest; she encouraged women to pursue careers in STEM and technical fields, helped organize the Los Rios Federation of Teachers, and served as an officer in the Academic Senate. Sue was a passionate and deeply committed person who could be gracious when necessary without ever losing her sharp-edged Molly-Ivins-brand of Texas humor.

Sue and her beloved husband of 41 years, Charles (Chuck) Kahler, were generous hosts, excellent cooks, and adventurous travelers, sharing a special love for the coast of northern California, especially their beautiful home in Dillon Beach where they enjoyed entertaining family and friends.

Sue was preceded in death by her daughter Rebecca (Payne) Rosensteel and her grandson Andrew Ewing. She is survived by her husband, children Steven Payne and Jennifer (Payne) Ewing, grandchildren Michael Ewing, Jason Rosensteel, Amanda (Rosensteel) Butler, and two great-grandchildren. Sue is also fondly remembered by the Kahler children and grandchildren.

Please join us for a memorial gathering on Sunday, August 14th, 1 pm, at Mulvaney's B&L in midtown Sacramento where we will celebrate 90 years of a life lived fully and well. For further details, please email suekahlermemorial@gmail.com.
