Recreation Events

 

Little Peoples Olympics this Saturday

For those even younger, the annual Little People's Olympics is right around the corner, 9 a.m. Saturday April 30 at the Jennifer Wilson Memorial Track adjacent to Ronald Reagan Fundamental School. This is for ages 2-7 with an on-site registration fee of $5 (8 a.m. on-site registration the day of the event). Boys and girls are eligible to participate. Events include various runs, standing long jump, softball or tennis ball throw. Children will participate in separate groups based on their age. Call 373-5243 or stop by the Parks & Rec office on the first floor of City Hall, One City Plaza, to take advantage of advance registration discount.

 

Sand Volleyball Tournament Series starts with Leapin' Lizards

Enjoy the weather and have an exciting time with friends while participating in the Leapin' Lizards volleyball tournament, 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday, May 14 at Kennedy Volleyball Courts, on Kennedy Lane north of 24th Street. This is the first of three in the summer series of sand volleyball tournaments scheduled. Register now at the City of Yuma Parks and Recreation Department for $30 per 4-person co-rec team (goes up $10 if you wait until the day of the event).

 

Private kayak trips

If you are interested in enjoying the Colorado River and can get a group of 10 together, the City of Yuma Parks and Recreation Department offers private kayak trips for you and your party for fees as low as $18 per person. Call 928-373-5243 today, to reserve your own private trip down the river. 

 

Fairy Party 2011

Time again for this year's Fairy Party: Come see how West Wetlands Park will be magically transformed into Fairyville from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7. Crafts, food, games, music and dance are just some of the activities planned for all fairies in attendance. Each fairy will also have the opportunity to meet our own Fairy Godmother. Children are invited to come wearing their best fairy clothes and enjoy the 2011 Fairy Party for $18 per child; register in advance with Parks and Recreation soon as space is limited.

 

Senior/Adult Activities at North End Community Center

The North End Community Center, 160 E. 1st St., offers daily programs for adults and seniors.  Shoot some pool or join in on one of the many classes they offer, such as arts and crafts.  Classes are taught by experienced Parks and Recreation instructors. Stop in any time to see what's happening and join in the fun: The office hours at the North End Community Center are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursdays. For more information please call 928-373-5245 or 928-373-5243.  Registration for any of their programs can be taken at the North End Center, or the main Parks and Recreation office on the first floor of City Hall.

 

Aqua Zumba

Get your hearts pumping to the Hot Latin rhythms of Aqua Zumba. This is a great way for those 14 and up to get in shape while having fun at the pool. This program is led by two of Yuma's finest and funniest instructors, Misty Smith from KTTI and Cindy Fram. Join them for a Zumba party in the pool 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from April 4 through May 27. Drop-in fee is $4 per class.

 

Adult Fun Swim

Adult Fun Swim is a great way to stay in shape and stay cool as the temperatures are starting to rise. Offered 1:30 to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at Carver Pool, 5th Street and 13th Avenue, ages 14 and up may swim laps, perform low-impact exercises or just relax in the water. Pay daily fees of $4.50 or $3 for city residents or save with a monthly pass of $48 or $32 for city residents. Register now with the City of Yuma Parks and Recreation Department.

 

 

Events at the Historic Yuma Theatre, Yuma Art Center and Yuma Civic Center/ Ray Kroc Complex

 

High School Musical Jr. 2

The High School Musical Jr. 2, the Disney Channel's smash hit musical, comes to life on the Historic Yuma Theatre stage for two performances only, 7 p.m. Friday, April 29 and 7 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at The gang's all here for an action packed summer extravaganza as Troy, Gabriella, and the rest of the Wildcats finish junior year and blast onto the summer scene.  Tickets are $5 and all seating is reserved.  Tickets are available online at www.yumaaz.gov, by phone 928-373-5202, or in person at the Yuma Art Center located at 254 S. Main St. in Yuma, AZ.  High School Musical Jr. 2 is presented by the Yuma Art Center's Infinite Imagination Youth Theater, which encourages children 8 to 16 to become involved in the performing arts and exposes them to various disciplines including theatre, dance, and music. This show is also made possible in part by the Yuma Community Foundation and the Sturges Charitable Trust.

 

Thursdays at the Theatre

Thursdays at the Theatre, a monthly film series of foreign and independent film hosted by the Arizona Western College Foundation, takes place the first Thursday of every month at the Historic Yuma Theatre, 254 S. Main St. Starting 7 p.m. Thursday, May 5, it's a psychological thriller entitled "Illegal," from Belgium, Luxembourg and France.  The story is about a Russian teacher living illegally in Belgium with her teenage son. Once they are arrested and threatened with deportation, the son escapes while she takes off on a journey where she is determined to preserve her dignity and find her son. Tickets are $5 at the door but half off for AWC or NAU students with proper ID.

 

 

Concerto Classics

The Yuma Orchestra Association presents Concerto Classics, 7 p.m. Saturday, May 7 at the HYT. Concerto Classics features special guest Arizona State Attorney General Tom Horne playing a selection from the Piano Concerto in F by George Gershwin. Also performing are the Twinklers, String Ambassadors, and Civic Orchestra. Tickets are $10 general admission, $15 per couple, $5 for students, seniors, and military. Children 12 and under attend for free. Tickets are available for purchase in advance or at the door at the Yuma Art Center, 254 S. Main St.

 

 

Desert Hills Golf Course

 

Yuma Heat Golf Tournament

The Yuma Heat Swim Team will be holding their annual golf tournament May 7 at Desert Hills. The format is a four-person scramble. Registration is $70. For more information contact Troy Maryniak at (928) 210-3661.

 

 

Take Pride In Yuma

There were 55 cases of graffiti abated the week of April 20-26. This compares with 43 cases the previous week.

 

Thanks to the participants in the Yuma Police Department's GREAT program (Gang Resistance, Education and Training) for their cleanup efforts last Saturday morning!

 

Graffiti cleanup and vandalism currently costs the Yuma taxpayers over $200,000 per year. Please help us reduce vandalism by reporting incidences of crime to 78-Crime (782-7463) and graffiti to the Graffiti Busters hot line, 329-2828. If you witness a crime in progress, call 911.
