Ensuring 24/7 Emergency Response and Community Safety

The City of Santa Cruz operates a volunteer-based Duty Program, which helps us ensure we provide exceptional customer service and rapid emergency response around the clock, including nights and holidays.

The program relies on City workers who volunteer to respond to calls for duty outside of their typical work hours. The program started in 2010 within the Sewer Department and has since expanded to include staff from various departments like Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Parking, and Resource Recovery.

The Duty Supervisor, available 24/7, provides crucial guidance and support, ensuring duty personnel work as a team in handling critical situations. Duty personnel play a crucial role as first responders, logging essential details and swiftly coordinating with relevant departments for effective follow-up.

This work has been especially critical during severe winter storms where duty personnel respond to damaged infrastructure, fallen trees, and other service interruptions. Thank you to all the staff volunteers for your commitment to excellent public service and helping keep our community safe!
