Citywide Safety Enhancement Zone: Triple Fine Penalties July 4-7 for Violating the Fireworks Ban
With thousands expected to visit Santa Cruz for the upcoming 4th of July holiday weekend, the Santa Cruz City Council implemented measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration for everyone. From Thursday, July 4, at 8 AM to Sunday, July 7, at 8 AM, a citywide Safety Enhancement Zone will be in effect.
Fireworks Ban
All fireworks, including those labeled "Safe and Sane," are illegal in Santa Cruz.
Triple Fines
Violations of the municipal code, such as fireworks possession, public alcohol consumption, graffiti, noise violations, and trespassing, will result in triple fines.
Fire Danger
Fireworks pose a significant fire hazard, especially under dry and windy conditions. Each year, fireworks spark fires in wildland and urban areas, putting lives and property at risk.
Santa Cruz Police and Fire departments are committed to your safety. Please report illegal fireworks to the non-emergency line at 831-471-1131. We rely on our community's cooperation to keep Santa Cruz safe.

Main Beach Restrooms Reopen After Extensive Renovation
After a long-awaited renovation, the Main Beach public restrooms officially reopened on Friday, June 28. The facility, featuring three stunning mosaic murals, was formally reopened with a one-of-a-kind ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The original restrooms, built in 1986, were a priority for the City because they serve as a public amenity and a gateway to Main Beach and Monterey Bay.
“It might seem silly that we’re all so excited about a restroom, but these are not your average bathrooms,” said Santa Cruz City Manager Matt Huffaker at the ceremony. “Over the last nearly 40 years, these restrooms have worked hard serving over a hundred million people — 3 million a summer. This project allowed us to transform it.”
The City of Santa Cruz Park and Recreation Department applied for a Clean California grant through Caltrans. Caltrans awarded the City over $700,000 to contribute toward renovating the Main Beach restrooms. “And now we have new restrooms with these amazing murals here next to the Boardwalk at such an iconic location," said Parks and Recreation Director Tony Elliot.
Thank you, and congratulations to Noah Downing, Britt Hoberg and the Wharf crew, Kathy Mintz, artist Taylor Reinhold, and CalTrans.

Important Downtown Traffic Update: 100 Laurel Street Project
From July 8 to 17, the contractor will perform necessary road resurfacing and striping on Laurel Street, Front Street, and Pacific Avenue to improve safety. On weekdays from 8 AM-4 PM, Laurel Street and Front Street will be reduced to a single lane. We anticipate significant delays and recommend seeking alternate routes. Pedestrian access will be limited, and we ask everyone to follow all posted detours.
Once the work is complete, all the construction fencing for that project can be removed, opening that end of downtown! Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
