Preview of September 12 Common Council Meetings

Starting at 6:30 P.M. on Tuesday, September 12, the Mequon Common Council, meeting as the Committee of the Whole, will review and discuss proposed amendments to Chapter 62 of the Sign Code.

Starting at 7:00 P.M., the Common Council, meeting as the Mequon Municipal Water Utility Commission, will review a draft update of the City’s Water Utility Master Plan. Thereafter, the Council will hold its monthly meeting. The meeting will begin with a first reading of the following ordinance:

  1. Amending Chapter 2 of the Municipal Code, eliminating the bond requirement for certain City Officers, which is now covered by insurance

After the first reading, the Common Council will consider a number of other items, including:

  • Amending the City’s Operating Budget for Fiscal Year 2023 to adjust budgeted amounts within the Department of Public Works due to unanticipated repairs and material cost increases in a net amount not-to-exceed $36,576
  • Approving a State/Municipal agreement for a Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Study with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation
  • Approving the purchase of a replacement compact track loader with related attachments from Fabick Cat in the amount of $89,750

Police Department Issues Bus Safety Reminder

Now that kids are back in school, the Police Department would like to remind everyone of the rules of the road in relation to school busses. The City’s priority is to keep children, roadways and all drivers as safe as possible.

  • Drivers must stop on the street or highway 20 feet or more from any school bus that has stopped and is flashing red warning lights
  • Stopping applies to both vehicles approaching from the rear and from the opposing lanes.
  • The only time opposing lanes of traffic do not have to stop is  if the highway is divided with a center median.
  • No vehicle may proceed until a bus resumes motion and has turned off its red warning lights.
  • The stop arm on the bus is an added communication to other drivers, but the lack of an extended stop arm is not a reason to pass a bus whose red lights are flashing.

A vehicle owner can be cited when the driver of a car passes a school bus illegally. A law enforcement officer need not witness this violation if the school bus driver reports it to the law enforcement agency within 24 hours. Fines can be quite high for illegally passing a school bus, but the risk of hitting a child is even higher.
