WisDOT Project Updates

Construction season is well underway and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is already looking towards its next projects. Please see the summaries below for updates on WisDOT projects happening throughout the Mequon area. If residents are interested in finding out more about these projects, please go here. Current projects under construction can be found here.

Mequon Road Interchange

This project will begin in the fall of 2023 and be complete by mid-summer 2025. Crews will begin work widening the southbound shoulder and constructing the partial width freeway bridge. The general schedule is as follows:

Mequon Road (STH 167) West: Wasaukee Road to Buntrock Avenue

The proposed project is to mill 2 inches and pave 2 inches from Wasaukee Road (starting 1400 feet to the East) to Solar Avenue (approx. 2.6 miles), with some base patching, along with diamond grinding the concrete pavement from Solar Avenue to North Buntrock Avenue (approx. 0.8 miles). At the City of Mequon’s request, the project will include the addition of sidewalk on the north side of Mequon Road from Wauwatosa Road to Swan Road, as well as mid-block crosswalk enhancements. Construction is currently scheduled for the 2025 season (May thru November 2025). Please note that this project will impact traffic, including a road closure with full detour for a portion of the project. Access for property owners will be maintained.

Wauwatosa Road (STH 181)

The proposed pavement replacement project includes reconstructing the roadway with a new pavement structure and subgrade improvements, replacing all curb and gutter, adding sidewalk and curb ramps, reconstructing/replacing the storm sewer inlets along the outside curbs, and replacing traffic signal equipment at West Donges Bay Road, and will extend from County Line Road north to a point just south of the Mequon Road (STH 167)/Wauwatosa Road (STH 181) intersection. Signing will be updated per policy and new pavement marking will be placed. The work will also include traffic control and erosion control. There will be two detours during construction as all the northbound lanes will be reconstructed during stage 2 and all southbound lanes during stage 3. The project currently is scheduled for construction in 2026/2027.

Mequon Road (STH 167)/Wauwatosa Road (STH 181)

WisDOT has also created a new, separate project for the intersection work at Mequon Road/Wauwatosa Road. The new project is a pavement replacement project. This is not a full reconstruct, and no geometric changes are anticipated. The project will take place in 2027 and the scope includes removal and replacement of existing pavement, base, and curb and gutter and subgrade improvements through the intersection. The median opening west of the intersection will be closed and a WB left turn lane will be added at Solar Ave to accommodate U-turns. All curb ramps will be upgraded to meet current ADA standards. The existing pork chop islands will be removed and reconstructed. The existing traffic signals will be upgraded with a new controller, possible addition of EVP, removal of the video detection, and installation of base patched loops. Storm sewer will also be evaluated to determine repair or replacement needs.

Mequon Road (STH 167) East: Buntrock Avenue to Port Washington Road

The project scope includes milling off 4 inches of existing asphalt and overlay with 4 inches of new asphalt surface, including some base patching. Curb ramps will be updated to meet Americans with Disability Act (ADA) standards. Traffic signals and lighting will be replaced at Cedarburg Road, River Road, and Range Line Road. Deck patching, concrete surface repair, and concrete deck seal of bridge over Milwaukee River will also be completed. The railroad crossing near the Ozaukee Interurban Trail will be updated as well. Construction is anticipated to take place in 2028, but may happen as early as 2027 if funds are available.
