The goal of the project is to create collaborative learning spaces that provide a student-centered, experience-based learning atmosphere throughout the school. Ultimately, existing classrooms and hallways will be renovated to provide a similar learning environment that the classrooms and hallways in the STEAM Collaborative Learning Center provide.

Construction is set to begin immediately after the school year concludes and be completed and ready for use before the start of the 2023-2024 school year.

National Public Works Appreciation Week

Happy National Public Works Week to the City of Gulf Shores Public Works Department!

The Public Works team, also known as the "Can Do Crew," serves city residents through so many impactful and different ways each and every day. These men and women are essential workers who keep our community running strong all year long through carrying out countless tasks that most of us don’t even think of because they are doing their job, and doing it well. Some of these daily tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Cleaning the beaches every day
  • Keeping streets litter-free
  • Maintaining cleanliness daily in City buildings, parks, beach bath houses, rental buildings, sports facilities and event locations
  • Raising and lowering of the American Flag and City flags as ordered by Government officials
  • Maintaining the recycling drop-off center and keeping a record of materials processed
  • Managing and executing City-wide debris-pickup service
  • Working alongside law enforcement to enforce rules and keeping the beach safe for all beachgoers and wildlife
  • Supporting new construction projects at Gulf Shores City Schools
  • Maintaining all City buildings and the vehicle fleet
  • Maintaining all landscaping at City buildings and properties
  • Replacing street signs, stop signs, and other way-finding signs throughout the City
  • Maintaining proper drainage in neighborhoods and throughout the City
  • Providing mosquito control
  • And so much more!

If you see a member of the Public Works Department this week, please join us in thanking them for all they do for our City!

Hurricane Season Begins June 1

Hurricane Season begins June 1 and now is time to make sure you and your family are ready in case there is an emergency! Here are a few helpful tips to help you get started.

Stay informed and Connected

One of the most important steps you need to take prior to hurricane season is to ensure you have a way to receive important updates regarding severe weather before, during and after the storm. Make sure you are following your local news and weather authorities for accurate updates.

Sign up for City Notifications

Sign up for our FREE notification program to receive important information, updates, and alerts from the City of Gulf Shores. Click here to sign up online today.

Obtain a Hurricane Re-Entry Pass

It is critical to have a current Hurricane Re-Entry Pass BEFORE hurricane season begins. In the event of an emergency where areas of Gulf Shores are evacuated, these decals serve to identify those who should be allowed into a restricted area(s) at the appropriate time. In accordance with the City of Gulf Shores Resolution 5642-16, once a Hurricane Warning has been issued for the Gulf Shores Area, re-entry decals are no longer distributed to any residents, businesses, or other entities. For more information on obtaining a hurricane decal, click here.

Evacuation Plan

In the event, we have a hurricane and an evacuation is mandated, you and your family must have a plan. Your plan should include where you are going, how you are going to get there, and how long it should take. For more information on evacuation plans, click here

Gather Supplies

The first 72 hours after a storm are on you. This means that after an emergency strikes, support and resources may be available right away. Every home needs an emergency kit with a three-day (72 hours) supply of food, water, and other basic needs. Consider the unique needs of your family, such as supplies for pets or medication for seniors.

For a list of recommended supplies for your emergency bag, click here.

Prepare your Property

There are several steps you can take around your home to help protect it from the effects of hurricanes:

  • Trim trees on your property.
  • Declutter drains and gutters.
  • Bring in any outside objects (furniture, yard tools, etc.) that could become hazardous flying debris.
  • Install hurricane shutters.
  • Most importantly, we ask that if you notice a drainage issue that can possibly cause future flooding, please get in touch with the City of Gulf Shores Public Works Department at 251-968-1156.

We hope these preparedness tips help alleviate some of the stress of hurricane season. For more hurricane preparedness information, please visit www.ready.gov.
