Gourmet Alley Project: Trash Enclosures are Starting to Take Shape & Railroad Alley Paving is Complete

Post-installation for all three trash enclosures continued this week, and work is happening behind the scenes on the metal work for the sides of the enclosures. Next week, crews should complete the post-installation, following which they can begin pouring concrete for the trash enclosure slabs and the parking lot curbing. In addition, the rebar cages for the light foundations were constructed off-site this week and are anticipated to be installed in the next week or two.

Lastly, pavement rehabilitation work on Railroad Alley between Lewis Street and Hornlein Court was completed this week.

We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through the Gourmet Alley Project. Your support is invaluable to us, and we are committed to delivering a project that enhances our community and downtown.

2024 Citywide Pavement Rehabilitation Update

Significant progress has been made on the City’s 2024 Pavement Rehabilitation Project.

The major paving work for this year’s project has been completed, with segments on major corridors such as Tenth Street, Thomas Road, and Wren Avenue having been ground and re-paved. Striping for these segments is scheduled for the end of June. In the meantime, crews have begun working on the roads scheduled for resurfacing treatments; this work is expected to continue through July.

We regularly receive questions about the process for selecting street segments for the annual Pavement Rehabilitation Project. Each year, streets throughout the City are graded and categorized based on their condition and level of travel. This information, combined with the anticipated repair cost, is then used to map out areas of work that will benefit the community most and increase the overall pavement condition for our city. Work on some streets in extreme disrepair may be postponed due to the high repair cost. Delaying this work allows the budget for pavement rehabilitation to stretch further, enabling rehabilitation and saving more streets in mild disrepair, providing an overall cost savings in the long run.

  • State of emergency declarations
  • Red flag warnings

  • Potential flood or other disaster
  • Public events or gatherings in which there is a significant concern for public safety

This weekly report is provided as part of our commitment to transparency regarding the staffing status at the Santa Teresa Fire Station.

Ask Gilroy: Your City, Your Questions!

Thank you to everyone who submitted questions this week!

We've provided answers to some of the questions below, and look forward to more questions this week!

Responses provided by City Administrator Jimmy Forbis:

❓On Camino Arroyo Drive directly across from the Gilroy Crossing Shopping Center there are two abandon autos covered with discarded tires and other debris that appear to be occupied by homeless people. This is an eyesore and likely unsanitary. What can/will the Gilroy government do to eliminate this dangerous situation?

The Police Department (PD) Community Engagement Team (CET) has had several interactions with this individual, as they have moved around the City several times after being warned, having their vehicle tagged, and being cited on two separate occasions. The last citation for trespassing was issued in the previous two weeks. This individual is currently parked on private property across from Kohl’s; PD has contacted the property owner to get the required signage to cite them for trespassing. If they eventually move to public property, the City can tow the truck but will need a place to store the tires for 90 days.

What are the plans for connecting Luchessa from Miller to Santa Teresa Boulevard?

Luchessa Avenue between the Luchessa/Miller roundabout and the Luchessa/Vintner roundabout is planned to be built as part of the Glen Loma Ranch project (TM 20-05 - Rocky Knoll, Canyon Creek, Malvasia II). This project is currently in the planning phase.

In the City newsletter of 23 February there was a response to my question on when the RRFBs at the roundabouts at Miller and Santa Teresa would be activated. Jimmy stated the the Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) is on the project's punch list and will be activated within the next month. It has been 3.5 months since this response and the beacon has not been turned on.

Developers have not been able to obtain the new equipment to complete the repairs because of supply chain delays. The electrical equipment continue to have long lead procurement times. As a temporary measure until the new electrical equipment is available, Developer will be looking for used parts and install used equipment as a temporary measure. Part of the repairs includes a new street light, which is expected to be installed by 6/28/24.
